I'm going to buy a new 56k, but I was wanting some opinions as to what the best modem is out there for gaming, as broadband isnt much of a reality where I live. Also, if you could tell me what internet provider you are using with your modem, it would be helpful as well. Thanks guys.

i use to have an actiontec call waiting usb modem before i got cable. that was one of the best gaming modem i ever had, along with my isp www.thwy.net. I consistently got ping of around 150-160 ms which is pretty darn good considering some dsl people get those pings. Now that i got cable, i gave my modem to my friend, and he signed up with the same isp i had. Before, his ping use to be around 230-250ms, but now with the modem i let him borrw and the new isp, its at 170-180ms. Even without the isp, he used juno, and it was still about the same ping. gotta love that modem:)

I believe the USR Performance modem is also a good bet...

Is the USB version of the actiontek necessarily superior to th PCI version? Just curious, I'm not very familiar with the standards of both.

not to sound like a hard on but, 'best for gaming' and '56k modem' are contradiction in terms, just get some ISDN or something from the phone company

ISDN is dirt cheap man, 128KB ACTUAL SPEED ISDN in my town cost $20 Canadian that is about $12.50 American that's the cost of like 8 Big Macs from McDonalds, if your State/Territory/Province is well hooked up it will cost about the same for you

Some USR modems have a NORMAL/GAMING setting. The gaming setting sets the modem to send less data at a time and reduces the timing between. That's perfect for ping in gaming, but awful in normal browsing/downloading.

If you want a USR, check first that you have EXTRA CLEAN phone lines as they are quite sensitive. One other test to do : put your speakers to at least half their power, then turn on and off the room lights/TV/vacuum. If you hear a sound glitch, expect a USR modem to hang up each time it happens.

your ping while playing on 56k depends more on your isp than your modem. however, us robotics makes a good 56k modem. a good ping in CS using a0L :( would be around 250 as opposed to a 170 ping using prodigy. you may want to try out juno if you are interested in something free.
