I am setting up a new system with an ECS K7S5A mobo and a AMD 1600 XP CPU. I have a video card and a hdd only in system. I connected only the power switch connection just to be able to boot system to see if it would power up. It did not, the CPU fan turned briefly and that is all. Is there something I missed. At this point I know it does not matter but the hdd has win2k on it.

VERY Fussy about psu, and clear cmos. That should do it.

Are you using a copper shim? I accidentally put my shim on wrong and shorted out the CPU...BHAM...bad CPU!! Did the exact same thing CPU fan on a little bit and all the other stuff got power...but wouldn't boot. The good news is the board was ok whenever I got my new athlon...but my ego was hurting a little. Try another CPU that would be my first step...sounds like that could be the prob. I hope that your luck is better than mine and it is something else that is wrong. Good Luck!

Today I am exchanging the mobo, but I did reset the cmos 4-5 times. Only once did the system boot, and then failed. Will see if it happenes with another board. I have installed this board in another case w/ 300w power. This new case has 320W. I let you know today if it the mobo.

THIS MAY HAVE BEEN MY PROBLEM. I exchanged the mobo, cpu and the case. Installed the hdd and video card. It did boot and run on seconed attempt after I cleard the cmos. I think I know the problem. The mobo sat on the little brass risors, bot there are little metal chips that also sit on the edge of the mobo taht are risors of sort. My original case did not come with them so I did not have any installed. I guess they are sort of a ground. Well anyway all is up and running except for an error message that the cmos battery is low. Will change battery. Thank you all for your help.

Battery not bad. Just the way the board is shipped... Look in manual to set the CMOS juper rihgt, and it will go away.
MB
I had a system with the K7S5A an AMD 1700+ running very well for a few days. CMOS said the chip was at 117F and the system was 88F degees. A couple of case fans brought it down to 114F and 84F. It worked great but froze after a while, I just figured it needed better cooling. I wanted to upgrade the CPU fan and heatsink and I swaped them out - it went well (I thought) but now I get nothing. The monitor is black, no post even with everything unplugged but the HD no beeps for the missing video card (which it has done before). I cleared the cmos by putting the jumper on and then taking it off. The fan goes on (I unplugged all but the CPU for now) The DVD and CD lights flash like crazy, I think I hear the HD(New fan is loud), but it is otherwise stone dead.
Any one know what I sould do next. A new CPU or a new MB?
I have just enough knowledge to be dangerous. I am doing searches of the forums here to expand my limited experience, so forgive me if this is a easy newbie question, but it's got me stumped.

KidKasha,
I had a grounded ECS 725a. The tech guy where I bought it burned out 4 boards in my case after the original one that I burned out. He finally came to the conclusion that the board had to be grounded. I don't really know how it relates, but it is an odd coincidence.

I changed the case as I think it was not grounded. I returned the CPU and Mobo to Fry's, Now it works fine. I even got to install a copy of my old system HDD, and upgraded from win98se to win2k pro with all my installed data. So far so good. Please do not ask me how I did it.
