Want to install new HD. I have File Copy and would like to know just how to use it. Do I need to FDISK and Format before using file copy? Can I put a new OS on the new drive and just copy over all other files using File Copy? I have always just started from scratch but a fire has destroyed all my program disks.
Thanks
Bud

Bud: Are you adding this HDD in an existing machine or building a completly new one? What OS is on the drive you want to copy? If you are adding it to an existing machine the "XCOPY" command with the right switches works as good as any third party program. If you are building a new machine the only thing you will be able to transfer is your data. If you install a new OS you will have to install all of your programs under it so it knows how to find them.
Tough break the fire. If you registered the programs the vendor may send you new discs if you can somehow prove it via receipts etc. unless the fire got them too. Contact them and explain. Beg.
I am not familiar with File Copy. The XCOPY command will rebuild directory and sub-directory structure even empty ones. It is useful for making backup batch files too. Type "XCOPY /? |more" without the quotes at a prompt for explanation of the switches.

Thanks for the info guys. File Copy is a program that came with some disk manager programs such as ez bios. This is a replacement drive for my machine as I am running out of space. What I want to do is copy my old drive to the new one and then take out the old one. As to the X-copy 32 I still need to know if I have to format and FDISK the new HD first, before transfering the contents of the old to the new.
Just about forgot I am using win 95 upgrade.

Hi Bud, in response to ur question, yes u must fdisk & format the new HD but not ness. to use the /s switch when formating when u r going to use xcopy here are the commands xcopy c: /s/c/h/e/r/k D: this will clone an exact copy of ur hard disk C to d assuming c is the drive u wish to copy and d is the destination drive. make sure u empty recycle bin & internet temp files first good luck
Thanks, will do it first thing tommorow and see what happens.

I may be off the mark here. But if you want to take all your data off your old disc and place it on new without upgrading OS ghost is the answer. It is great you can get a trial version at http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/index.html
I use it for backups as well
Great program
