ok, this has been bothering me for a while now.
I need some one to ******** for me, if Windows is a GUI or an actual Graphical OS.
Me and a friend have had this ongoing fight about windows being a grafical OS or not.
My arguement is that it is NOT a graphical OS, but a GUI running over top of DOS as the OS, Am i correct or not. To me, there is no such thing as a graphical OS.
My friend says I'm wrong. His arguement is that Windows is a true Graphical OS.
Just thought I would ask, you know, just so I can sleep at night from now on and all that...
thanx

I think Windows is a GUI. Reason: Most of the stuff you do in Windows (not a program like word, excel, etc.) can be done in DOS. Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete . . Scan Disk, Explorer (type dir at the C: prompt, same thing).

I agree.
I think that Windows ME, 98, 95 and prior are all fancy GUI's complete with bells and whistles. (My opinion only).
No matter how much it has improved and evolved thru the years it started as DOS and is still based on DOS.

Win-2000 and NT?
Hmmmmm, I would call them operating systems.

The point is academic. If the "OS" does what you want, what does it matter what you call it?

He's trying to win an argument or at least get to the bottom of this nagging question is what matters here I believe. Not weather it is or isn't.
I believe that Windows is a GUI based on DOS. Without the pretty and friendly Graphical User Interface, you wouldn't see as many Personal Computers in the average home as you do now. If I had to use Fortran or Cobolt or java or pure DOS to do what I do now, I would be leaving these thoughts on your telephone answering machine.

I haven't had the joy of NT or W2K yet so no comment there.

Cheers!
