This allows one to manage and observe the network. It easily follows unmanaged switches do not do this. Vampiel 10-13-2000, 03:34 PM So I assume that this would mean that the only advantage to a managed switch is that they are easier to troubleshoot? As in the network can be observed by a computer? As well as make the network more efficient? What type of program would you need for that or would it come with the switch? I have been thinking about getting one but I do not know if it would be worth it to get a managed switch or an unmanaged switch. qball 10-14-2000, 05:26 PM sheesh, some people just aren't satisfied...lol http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I know about and of networks, though I am no expert. Anyway, the advantage of any smart device is control and management. If this is the only advantage, it is a huge advantage. The question I would like to know is performance do 'managed' switch take a hit because of SNMP? I would guess, not or not enough to care. Yes, the network could be observed by a computer (server or remote admin). I would also hope the network could be configured to monitor itself. The network you install will have its own management software, or third party stuff will exist. This is fairly low level tech stuff, but it has a protocol, and network management is core to even having a network, if you know what I mean. I wouldn't know the price difference, but if you can get the managed switch, get it even if you don't use it. You may later, and at least you will have the capability.
