Just read this off of Tomshardware...
http://www.tomshardware.com/technews/index.html#0219

A bit is written by exposing photosensitive glass to radiation

Is this safe? I don't think it's worth it, even for 10 terabytes.

It is perfectly safe. You get more radiation from the monitor you are viewing this on.

The light emitted by any laser is referred to as radiation. And yes, it can be dangerous if mishandled.

Radiation is a good thing. We wouldn't exist otherwise.

Now, OTOH, radioactive radiation might be a concern, but I doubt it. Do you freak out like this when you go to the doctor? Have you ever had a single X-ray done? If so, you probably have been exposed to more radiation than you would get from ten lifetimes of using the device they are talking about.

You're regular cd-rom drive emits the same thing. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Common sources various wavelengths of radiation are ;

1. Airline travel, a 3hr flight above 30,000 ft gives you a larger dosage than several X-rays.

2. Concrete, most all concrete is a hotter emitter of alpha wave that the fuel used in a nuclear reactor, PRIOR to the fission process.

3. China, the stuff you eat off of, imported plates with the fancy writing and drawings are VERY HOT in emissions.

4. Step-Down transformers, the type for your scanner and printers. U no, the ones that change 120 volts AC to 12-20 volts DC, these emit EMF's at a VERY high rate for about a foot.

5. Electric clocks, the OLD type with hands and a electric motor to turn them, BIG TIME EMF emitters for a foot or so.

6. Hair Dryers, granted the exposure vs dosage amount puts these devices in the low TOTAL dosage area.

7. Your CAR, Steel Belted tires are the single most hazardous emitter of EMF's in society today.
One Volvo with a particular tire exceeded the 30 milligaus level by a significant amount.

There is a whole host of items in society today that emit various types of radiation.

Generally speaking, radiation is nothing more than light waves at frequencies that are above or below the visible range of Human eyesight.

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun causes skin lesions and contribute to skin cancers.
Mercury vapor and Metal Halide lighting and Florescent lights also emit UV wavelength radiation.

IR radiation or Infra-Red is just above our vision capability, somewhere about 880 nanometers. Heat off an warm object is IR radiation. Go further up the scale and finally you get to the very short wavelength called microwave. The length of those beams is about 3mm in length.
A CB radio wavelength is 103 inches in length.
FM radio radiation is somewhere around 26" in length.
The US Navy has buried underneath the ocean floor thousands of miles of cabling to contact our submarine fleet.
This is called Super-Low Frequency, the distance ability of SLF transmissions is rather short, compared to say,, AM Radio.

AM radio uses amplitude modulation for accuracy, it bounces the signal off the ionosphere to transmit to long distances.
Likewise, CB Radio is near the AM FREQUENCY and it is common to get "Skip" and talk to south America or Europe on a 4 watt transmitter.

FM is frequency modulation, it transmits in straight lines only, any terrain will block out the signal.

The cell phone transmitters produce a signal that is confusing to Homing Pigeons. In Briton many groups have abandoned the sport because of losses up to 90% of their birds.
According to Dr Louis Slezin of the Microwave News.

Radiations are widespread, some hazardous some we THINK are harmless.

One sure source of Harmful Radioactive material in the Home is a Smoke detector. It has a few microcuries of a Very Hot Element.

Okay okay okay! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif It's safe! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

This reminds me of something my high school Chem teacher told me about. One of his professors developed the technology of MRI's, and when he first announced it, he called it Atomic something alignment. Well, the next day, when he went to work, there were protestors all over the place, with signs that said, "Stop the nukes!" "Remember Hiroshima!" and other stuff completely unrelated to the medical breakthrough. However, he had first named it that because that is essentially what it did: align the atoms, then create an image based on the time that they took to get back to normal.

At least I didn't go in front of their building with a sign http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif.
