A friend wants to buy this and says its for AMD only, ive never heard of it, whats the "SP" mean?, is this memory only compatable with the first generation m/b's or whats the deal?? Heres what it says about it: 256MB PC133 SP SDRAM DIMM's Only Compatible w/AMD K7 Apollo Via 693/694 Chipset, SIS 630, ----theyre 160$ apiece and made by Zeus...can someone fill me in? thanks
I think this refers to SPD (Serial Presence Detect). All of the SDRAM I have seen has this. What some sticks have, and costs extra, is ECC (Error Code Correction), important for power users who crunch lots of numbers.
Some SDRAM modules have a special EEPROM chip on it that holds information about the SDRAM module, such as speed settings. The motherboard then queries this chip for information and makes changes in the settings to work with the SDRAM. Some motherboards require this feature. You will have to look at the manual, once again. If your board requires it, make sure you have it, because SDRAM without it won't work. - Hardware Central
The existence of an EEPROM on the stick conveys SPD ability.
