I need to buy me a very fast hard drive for my Duron system. I bought this little cheap 10 gigger and it's not cutting it. I need a very fast hard drive that performs good(the best). I am looking at about the size range of 20 - 30 GB. This little 10 gb hard drive is like a bottle neck to my computer because it takes a while to load up the programs or games. I don't want a SCSI hard drive. Just a 7200rpm IDE drive. And suggestions? Please provide some links to where I can buy these at. I will be purchasing it off the internet. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Oh yeah I have a Asus A7V with the ATA-100 controller. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

First of all make sure that your hard drive isn't sharing the IDE cable with a slower device. I had an IDE zip drive connected on the same IDE cable as my hard drive and that made my hard drive run slower. I didn't notice it run slower but I benchmarked my hard drive and wintune reported it slower than without the zip drive connected. I have 256MB RAM and probably that's why I didn't notice my hard drive run slower. Make sure you have enough RAM and finally if it's still too slow than buy a faster hard drive. I have a Maxtor 27.2GB 7200RPM UDMA66 hard drive and it's fast even set at UDMA33.

Hi,

Buy 2 smaller sized HD: the smallest 75GXP is a 15GB.
Then, buy a Promise FastTrak100 and configure the 2 HD in RAID0.

Can't beat that speed !!!

PCCOST.COM has a Maxtor 20.5GB for 119.00.

Also try UBID.COM they have some nice drives for pretty good prices.

My hard drive is on the Primary IDE channel and my CD-ROM is on my Secondary IDE channel. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I am thinking about purchasing a IBM hard drive. I hear good things about these drives all the time and I am just wondering if they are true. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I can live with a fast 15Gb hard drive. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Any suggestions on these IBM drives?

I agree with Stan. I have 2-IBM 20G 7200 Deskstars running through a modified $30 Fastrack controller(RAID 0/Striped)-bingo-->39MB/sec Read!!!
Makes some of the SCSI guys cry. :-)

Remember to use a 40 pin 80 conductor cable for maximum speeds.

Quote
"The added ground cables provide shielding and reduce crosstalk for higher frequency interfaces. It the ata 66 or 100 controller/mobo does not detect the 40pin 80 conducter cable the high transfer rates will not be available"
Get the Retail package as it has the 80 conductor cable and software and really good instructions and a super cool looking box for a mere, $8 more, well worth the money(15gb IBM 7200 gxp. This has greater data density that some other drives, and my IBM drives are SUPER quiet, especially compaared to the Maxtor and Quantum.
The Maxtor clicks loudly and the Quantum sounds like a SR-71 Blackbird winding up. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

It looks like there is a good chance of me getting that IBM ATA-100 7200rpm 30Gb hard drive. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I heard in order to use the ATA-100 controller on the Asus A7V you have to use the ATA-66 controller to first load up your OS and load the ATA-100 drivers then you can switch the drive to the ATA-100 controller. Is this correct? Can I put CD-Roms on this controller? Or should I just use the ATA-66?

Thanks for all the recommendations and advice. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
