Same here - what you need is experience, and lots of it.
One of the best things you can do, is to come to these forums daily.
Contained in these forums, is almost an answer to every problem you will ever meet regarding PC's.... - well, almost!
The people who hires you, basically wants a guy with lots of experinece with computers - of any kind, any os. Here in denmark, there is no "schools" or courses you can attend to become a pc-repairman - and the computershops sends the hardware back to the factory if it as faulty.
But still - this is the job that i dream of...
Start getting really into computers

Wiruz is right, you need experience. You get that by doing things yourself, like computerupgrades.I'm 17 and I have my own computer since I was 10.I've always builded my computer myself, except for the first time. It's my computer, everyone keeps their hands of it!It has actually always been fun to build/upgrade my computer.Building a new computer is like putting a Lego castle together for the first time!It really isn't hard to put a computer together. When you've done some upgrades like extra memory, new processor/cooler or new videocard you know what's going on and you can put your own computer together.
There are just a few things you have to know when you put a computer together for the first time. For instance the red wire on an IDE,SCSI or floppy cable is wire #1.There are cables now that can only fit one way and you don't even have to think about that.Memory can also fit only one way. It's getting easier and easier. Most things fit only on one place and in one way, like making a puzzle.

The forums and guides are a good start. The idiot's guide to pc repair isn't a bad idea either. you could read all the material in the world, but if you are truly serious, the only possible solution is to build your own box. You can work/upgrade/fix other PCs, but you truly know what you are doing (or in my case, not) when you can do it yourself.
The bare minimum would be;
case and psu
mobo
proc
memory
HD
vga and monitor
keyboard (maybe mouse)
software
Then when you can't get anything to work, all the more posts....

Check your local college. Lots of them offer courses on PC Repair.
Cheers!
