Don't ever ask a question like that without telling how much you plan on spending on your system... :D

I just upgraded from an Intel P233Mhz mmx system to an AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4Ghz 266Mhz system.

I am not partial to Intel or AMD. You'll have to make up your mind there. The newer AMD processors run very hot. You can check out www.tomshardware.com to review some of the tests that were run.

The AMD cpu will self-destruct if the fan ever fails. Intel will stop working, but is still usable. So, if you choose AMD, you have to make sure you are 100% comfortable with the cooling option you choose. If my budget permitted, I would purchase a water-cooled case. Then you can have a heat exchanger attached to the cpu, mobo, graphics card, power supply and the hard drive. Water cooled systems are very quiet since there are no fans.

My case has 5 case fans in addition to the p/s fan and the cpu h/s fan assembly. Three fans in the front of the case draw air into the case. Two fans in the rear push the hot air out of the case. The two rear fans are positioned over the cpu h/s and fan.

Whichever vendor you choose, just make sure you get a mother board that is made for the cpu you purchase.

I would stick with Windows 98 until Windows XP has time to mature. I had heard too many problems with Windows ME.

Windows 2000 is the most stable, but not all games will run under it.

nVidia has the best graphics accelerator cards. The GeForce 3 TI 500 is top of the line.

I would get a minimum of 512Mb of memory. If AMD, get the DDR solution. Intel has a faster memory solution.

Get a 10/100 base network card.

If wait just a little longer, you can get a read/write DVD drive.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your new system.

Translation: taake ThG (as opposed to tHc;) with a kilograin of NaCl, and also open your cognitive functions. Amd xp's have substantially reduced power consumption and subsequent heat production issues. As well as heat protection.

Would you put a rusty Yugo radiator without a temp gauge in you hopped up 396 Chevy?

Didn't think so.
