Trouble getting on the net with XP

Hello, for some reason I can't get online while I'm running XP. I have a dial up modem (:() and when I try to connect with ME it works fine but when I try with XP it always has some sort of an error message.

I have a lucent win modem and I dont know if there is a new driver for it or not, but if there is can someone please help me because i dont konw how much longer I can stand ME.

XP has problems working with devices 2 yrs and beyond although modem should just work anyway there all the same more or less. Check here see if you can find something. http://www.56k.com/ , http://www.modemhelp.org/ , make sure you selected your modem in dialup properties.

Well the error number is 678 and it says that I can't connect to the remote computer. I called my ISP a couple times that night and they didn't know why it would not work. And I bought the computer less than a year ago so I'm pretty sure that the parts wouldn't be older than 2 years.

you're not, by chance, running a network? Is your computer networked to another? Because, it sounds to me, when the error states, "can not connect to remote computer" like you are running a network. If you are, it just could be that some settings need to be changed.

Remove the modem from device manager and let XP set it up and go thru the internet setup or networking icon in control panel/networking to set it up again after a few tries it might kick in.
