I have windows 95b loaded with a lot of software applications. I inserted the bootup disk choose Option 2 (Start computer with cdrom support). I then did d: and hit the enter button. I typed in setup and windows 98se is now on my system and also all the previous applications programs. None of the old applications were deleted.I did not rename win.com or any folders when I was doing this.Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi Jack

I can't see what you are trying to get in your question are you sure you haven't left anything out? Is the problem that all the previous software is still there? Seeya champ.

in some posts regarding installing windows over an existing install you may see a reference to renaming win.com or other steps taken to make the process as smooth as possible ... but in your case, an upgrade, that is not needed because the newer version is meant to upgrade the previous one. i hope that answers your post ...

I saw some posts that your had to rename the win.com file otherwise when you install windows 98se full version it would delete all the previous applications. I was surprised that my installation worked without renaming win.com.

Last week while working on a junker, I attempted to overwrite W95 with a full edition of Win98..

BONGGGG, Sorry AzzHole it said, yu gots to use a "upgrade" disc to do this,, huh, I said.. well.

I've done the upgrade a lot of times right over the customers Win95 with the UPGRADE disc. I was sure it would work without any prodding and re-naming folders.. NOT

Oh Well,, later ..
It sits gathering dust while I work on other JuNK.

One of my favorite things to do is to spend 12 hours labor on a machine that's worth $150 dollars American,, don't ask why,,

Like the windshield wiper commercial says
"You're so stupid, You're so stupid, You're so stupid"

If you have the Win98 or 98SE update or upgrade disk, you don't have to rename anything.
If you've got an OEM or full version, then just rename win.com and it will install over top.
If you've only got the update/upgrade disk, and you want to do a full install after a format, just start the install normally, and when asked, plug in any previous windows disk, even Win 3.0 floppy will work.
