when trying to install windows 2000 professional after formatting the hard drive, I keep getting the error "NTLDR is missing" Press ctrl+alt+delete to restart. what should I do to correct this?

The pc previoulsy ran win2k only and was affected by a virus. It never had 95, 98 or similar.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

call it a hunch, boot up with a win9x floppy disk and run "fdisk /mbr"... its an easy, risk-free way of straightening out your Master Boot Record... its helped me out a few time when the PC can't find the boot files properly.

Might sound like a dumb one, but just make sure there's no floppy in the A:... you get that message when you leave certain floppy disks in the PC when booting :)

IF the fdisk /mbr doesn;t work, then delete and re-create that partition and then reboot and re-run "fdisk /mbr".

Let me know how you get on.

thanks for replying; this is the first thing I checked before I came on here; it didnt work.

I have a strong feeling at this point that the hard drive is shot. I installed a different one in that machine and ran the setup, and it seems to be working now. I will be trying the hard drive on a different pc later in the week to do the same, and will see what happens.
