Hi,.
KTX mointor 'bout 3 years old, a couple of days ago i was playing a game, and it turned purple ( everything that is supposed to be white has a purple tint) Not sure but i think i touched the cable to my geforce 2 400 and it came back normal.
Today the same thing happened but this time it seems permanent. If i power off and rebbot, the BIOS screen and the boot up is in purple instead of white,.... My monitor?
christ,.... any help greatly appreciated.
BTW, i've 'manipulated' the wire in any way imaginable so...

Hiya,
This is nearly always caused by the yellow gun in the monitor failing, leaving only the blue and red ones working. This problem can really only be fixed by having the monitor serviced.
The bit about getting it working again after jiggling the connection could be red herring but a good way of checking is to swap your monitor with someone else's.
Hope this helps.

Try "degaussing" it, maybe it'll work
Best regards:D

Nah, i've had that happen to a couple of monitors now. All it has been is the cable between the monitor and the case is stuffed. Not the power one (if your powering from your PSU), the other one. If you replace that and the plug on the end it usually sorts it out.
Cheaper fix too!

That could possibly be the loss of the green gun in the crt (there are 3 guns, red, blue, green) or more likely, the circuitry supplying the green signal to the crt or as mentioned above, the cable. Easiest way to find out if it's a monitor or video card problem is plug on a different monitor, go from there.

Have you recently unplugged and replugged it back in to your video card? If so, unplug it again and verify you have no bent pins on the monitor cable.:p

Kay,.
I removed the wire from the back of the monitor going to the vid card, and replaced it with a new one,. And my screen is still purple.
Brought my vid card over to a friends, and it works fine,. so it must be the green gun that is dead.,
Now, can i open my monitor safely and try tapping the green gun,. or will i die of high electric discharge,. If i keep my hand away from any 'metal looking' parts, shall i be safe?
Not ,much left to do with the monitor,. how much would i expect to pay a person to service it,. (replaceing the gun if necessary)?
thanx for all help...

nobodyno1...The "guns" are inside the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube).
You cannot get to them.
There is somewhere around 50,000 volts inside that case when it is on, I really do not advise any non service type person from going inside a TV or monitor that does not have some general electronic experience.
If you do decide to open it up, look for a large red wire, about the size of a small wood pencil. It will go from a black transformer on the motherboard, usually near the right rear end when viewing it from the back. The wire will attach to the CRT way up on the side, near the front-top of the CRT. It will have a rubber seal grommet about 3 inches around where it plugs into the tube. Stay away from this wire and transformer when the monitor is plugged into the AC...
What I do if and when I suspect maybe a bad connection somewhere inside a TV or monitor is get a VERY DRY wood (or plastic) cooking spoon, or other object...turn the thing on, PUT ONE HAND IN YOUR POCKET...(current has to pass THRU your body to do the heart damage)...with one hand in your pocket, you might get a tremendous shock, but not die from it..also, use insulated shoes...like tennis shoes...do not stand on concrete or dirt...do not touch anything grounded...now, with the monitor turned on and the purple being displayed onscreen...gently tap the CRT back near the end where the socket plugs in...have someone watch the picture on the screen...see if when tapping it, the purple tries to change...probably not, but this is one test for a bad connection inside the tube...other tests include gently tapping the motherboard and components here and there to see if anything helps...
In all likely hood, the gun has bit the dust inside the CRT, and nothing will fix that but a new CRT, which will cost more to buy and install than a new monitor.
There are controls inside the monitor that adjust the blue, red and green 'guns' for voltage, ect...sometimes, these controls get flaky and need readjusting or replacement...this is rare, but does happen...this takes a service technician to find replace and adjust.
I decided I better add one more word of caution. When I said to gently tap the rear of the tube...I ment exactly that.. gently tap it like let it swing in your fingers like a pendelum ect. Do not allow anybody to stand directly in front of the tube while doing this. What can happen if you accidently break the neck of the CRT off is...it will implode, and the neck of the tube will go thru the front of the screen like a bullet...instantly killing anybody standing in front of it.
A 'tap' is about as much pressure as you could do with a wood pencil at arms length. Have anybody that is watching the screen stand at, at least a 45 degree angle away from the face of the tube.

Or use a mirror, if you break the mirror it's only 7 years of bad luck.
:)but your friends will still be around:)

I had the same thing happen to my monitor-it's toast. We had it repaired, and it broke down again not long after that again. Once they start breaking down, it's worth it to repair a monitor. 17' monitors are cheap now anyway-about 90 bucks. Tough luck, man.

Bovon sounds like he knows what he is talking aobut, but personally i wouldn't play inside a tv or monitor when it was on unless there was a gun to my head...
Bad connection, too much dust, will of God, anything is possible...
but once they start breaking it usually means that they are ready to kick the bucket and even if you fix it, it will break again soon. Not always but usually goes that way.
the final decision is up to you, but buying a new monitor might save you an electrifying experience ( and i know how much fun those are :D ), or many trips and fees to the repair guy.

If you ask me, i wouldn't touch a monitor/tv opened; whether plugged or not. CRTs hold a *LOT* of voltage in them even when unplugged.
My electronics lecturer at Uni was thrown across a room when he "accidentally" touched what he shouldn't have (an opened TV set) while on work experience (age 17).
I'd play with it once i knew a lot about CRTs, not before.
