I have a windows 98 system showing 127 MB of RAM. The brand new system is freezing randomly after about an hour of use. No pattern has developed.

Thanks for any ideas.

hmmm - it might forget counting the first 640 kb with - some memory info differs.

But try - if you can - to switch the memory with something similar (preferrably 128) - and see if it displayes the same, or goes stable

If it is freezing after an hour of use, then that sounds like a heat issue. Check to make sure your CPu and power supply fans are running.

What kind of computer is it? Is it using onboard video? If it is it may be set up to use 1MB of system memory meaning it takes away 1MB from the 128MB leaving you with 127MB.

Right click on your desktop and select properties. Select the Settings tab. Click the advanced button. There should be an Adapter tab. This will tell you what kind of video you have.

If it is using onboard video you may be able to allow it to use more. But then you will be sacrificing more system memory.

gyoung is correct. I know that Dell computers reserve 1 mb for their proprietary stuff (usually video).

Be advised that some older motherboards/BIOSs show 127xxxKB for RAM when you have 128MB. Same for 64MB (63xxxKB) or 16MB (15xxxKB)
