Are either of these DVDs region free? I need to know b/c work is going ot buy me one. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks
Dave

Pioneer DVD-115 (http://192.216.185.10/mwave/DOC/a09670.html)

or

Toshiba SD-M1402 http://192.216.185.10/mwave/doc/a09830.html

And what is a half height DVD rom? The Toshiba says it is half height...

If neither is, I need to get one from mwave.com where my company buys from. Are there any here that are region free? http://192.216.185.10/mwave/DeptMM-CD.hmx?UID=&CID=&Back=

Thanks
Dave

I've got a 12X Toshiba and it's not region free, but you can set it to any region you want five times, then you'll have to reformat. My buddy has the slot load Pioneer 16X and I think it's the same way.

i think both are now crackable to be region free. It just involves flashing the bios of the drive with a modified one. I have the Tosh 1402 and it works like a charm. I would really recommend this drive. Go to www.firmware.com.bi (http://www.firmware.com.bi) this is the best site for info on region free DVDs. They have a BB but it isn't much good for gettin g things answered on but every drive that is patchable is listed with the relevant bios updates.

As for half height i have no idea, the drive however is just the same height as every other DVD or Cd drive.

Thanks guys. I like the Toshiba drives as I had one before and they are considered optimal with the HP cd-rw drives for RAW writing so...
Thanks

Dave that is the exact same reason i got the toshiba drive. It works perfectly along with my Hp 9110i (i think) cdrw and cloneCD.
the drive on its own is still a really good solidly built drive and the picture quality running through my Rage fury is fantastic on my 19" monitor. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks Rod, canit, stan and Tom. I am going to grab the Toshiba then. It appears to be one of th ebetter choices. The Pioneer 115 has a cracked region check now as well but the Toshiba has been out much longer and I like the Toshiba drive reviews and the clonecd endorsement.
Thanks
Dave
