I'm thinking of building an Athlon XP computer with 1 hardrive, 1 CDRW, 1 DVD ROM, 1 Floppy, and an Geforce 2 MX 400 AGP video card, should I get a 300W power supply, or is 250W sufficient?? How much expandibility do I have with a 250W????
Thx in advance

Hi there dathenv. There are some people who would say 250W would be sufficient for an AMD rig. Others would say 300W.
My opinion to this is: Get a 300W to be on the safe side. AMD recommends running their rigs on at least a 300W.
You can still try 250W, but then again if there's a problem with the rig, it may involve the PSU.
As for the expandability, I'm not that sure as I've never tried adding that many components until the PSU starts to be overloaded. Maybe some of the other guys around here can help you with that.
Hope it helps. :)

Going with some good parts demands a good steady power supply for future add-ons as well, an enermax 361 or 400 watt would be better if you can afford it. Definitely don't starve your new system video alone needs a steady stream of power since there more demanding these days, as far as I'm concerned you can't have enough power, should've gotten a bigger one myself but enermax is a good brand.

Another question, if a power supply is a "P4 power supply" can you still use it for an Athlon???

Actually the GeForce 2 MX consumes a lot less power than the other cards in the GeForce family. If you have the other GeForce cards, a 300W PSU at the least would really be strongly recommended. :)

Don't use a 250W, get the 300W. You can still use a "P4 power supply" for an AMD rig. It will have a couple power leads that are P4 specific coming from the P.S. , no problem though, just tuck them out of the way.

dathenv, this is my 2 cents, I would go for the 350 watts it is better to have a little extra power there just in case, or to be sorry and wish you had it..:D
