Hi Folks! How do I keep Windows from always asking for the CD when I make changes to my system? When I change my network settings, Windows does not have the right path and I have to click on a drop down box to point it to the right path: c:\Win98 (where my cab files are on my hard drive). I know it's somewhere in the registry. Thanks in advance, rob.

regedit, HKEY LOCAL MACHINE, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version, Setup, modify source path.

Try running Win98 setup from C:\Win98... After installation, you won't need the cd again. Interestingly, you won't be asked for the product ID no., the whole process should be around 15mins, and if you run setup while in Windows, you will see pictures of shiny happy Win98 users which aren't shown when you setup from DOS. Worth it just to see happy faces!

Yeah. Maybe I'll try that doing that setup trick. I looked in the registry and did not see a key that says source path, although I did edit a key called CommandLine. It's string is /T:C:\WININST0.400 /SrcDir=D:\WIN98SE /IZ /IS /IQ /IT /II /NR /II /C /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. I changed the C: to D:. I thought I could have fixed it by editing the HKey_Current_User InstallLocationsMRU key. I edited the key to say d:\win98se, and deleted the other keys that had other paths for other drivers that I had installed. I also edited the MRUList key to say "a". Of course, the "a" key is where I have the d:\win98se path entered into it. I tried this, rebooted and it defaulted to going to the A:\ drive and added the key for it, though it is the "b" key. I hope this make sense. I know I had a tip from ZD Net with this trick in it but I can't find it and haven't been able to locate a detailed, written way to do it on the net. **** slow connection. I have got to get cable or dsl. Thanks, Robert

I found a tip from scotter that points to a web site with tips. Here's where I found the info:http://windows.about.com/compute/windows/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.activewin.com%2F tips%2Freg%2Findex.shtml
Here' what's at the link:
To tell Setup the new location of its installation (.CAB) or .INf file, fire up your Registry editor, and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup\ (Windows 9x) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup\ (Windows NT)
Right-click on SourcePath. Select Modify. Type in your new path for the installation files (default is D:\WIN95, if you have only one hard drive with only one logical partition on your system). Restart to take effect.
It's just like the first reply. I probably just need to add the key SourcePath and add the path to it. I am kinda paranoid to add keys, but hey, I'm in there anyway and might as well try. Thanks !!!

The way I do it is to copy all the \Win9x Files off the CD into C:\windows\options\cabs (create if not there)and then running setup from there. In that way, it runs setup off the Harddrive, and defaults to that directory when its looking for files off the CD. You can even do this even if you already have windows installed. You just need to run setup again. What it does is basically alter the key that tells it where the windows CD is, as mentioned by previous posts. In this way, you dont have to muck around with the Registry, and if your doing a fresh install, should be faster than a install off the CD.
