My problem is that i cant send files thru msn messenger using a smc barricade. I know its got something to do with openning ports, but how?

this is the answer from the smc Faq

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?action=support_tools_show_FAQ&note_id=207

Can someone please tell me wich infromation needs to be put, and where? I've tried what they are saying but with no sucess. I'm probably just missing something. A screenshot of the setup would be very appreciated. I'm sure I could manage with that

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I have never had any troubles with messenger as far as basic communication. I have never tried to send files via messenger.

I have the SMC barricade and will try to figure it out for you. I have opened specific ports for gaming. It should be a similar process. I will find out what ports, etc. and get back to you.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. I have been very busy and not able to test this config yet.

I think you must go to the Special AP section. Enter the outgoing port in the trigger section. Then enter the incoming ports that correspond with the application. This is supposed to open the path that lets your data thru.

Now for some bad news... If you have tried the DMZ and not had any success then I fear that nothing will help you solve this problem. Why... because DMZ drops the entire firewall and should let everything in and out. The thing you want to try is a direct connect from your DSL router to your PC. If you cannot get files out there then you will know that it is not your SMC that is restricting the transfer.

I have had direct experience with this problem with a previous ISP and DSL subscription. I wanted to launch a Descent3 gaming server. No one was ever able to see it let alone join it via the internet. On messenger I could call people but could not start a direct voice link. I imagine your file transfer is under the same kind of protocols...

It seems that this ISP assigned internal 10.x.x.x numbers inside of THEIR NETWORK and on to me. So no matter what I wanted to try it was as if they had the SMC barricade in their system. I was invisible to the net. I did not in fact have a public IP number and no one could directly reach me via this DSL set-up. I spent a lot of money trying dual NIC cards with Sygate installed. Direct switches on my PC's with internal firewalls, and on and on. It was not until I called my ISP did I discover that they were the roadblock.

Today I am a customer of Qwest DSL. I have a public IP and everything works fine. Even my gaming servers work now.

So remove the SMC and try it direct. If that doesn't work then talk to your ISP. And be ready to be told that they cannot do anything about it...

thanks for the reply.

Ive tried setting it up in the special ap section and as DMZ host, but i cant honestly say that i even did that right. Which ports are ingoing and which ones are outgoing. Which one is public. Is it TCP protocol or UPD. It doesnt really explain it well in the faq for a router newbie. I kinda know my network stuff, but dsl and routers are kinda new to me.

All that said, ill try what u said and check if its at least the router thats causing the problem. But i also have a buddy with the same router but on a cable connnection. He has the same problem, but it could also be his ISP.

Overall its not a big problem, but kinda annoying. Well ill try your idea and report back.

Thanks

Well ive tried taking out the router, and file transfers worked fine. My buddy (with cable) tried the same thing with the same results. So this defenitly means its the router causing the problem.

So either i'm not setting up the router config right (most probable) or its just not doable for some reason.

Does anybody have a smc barricade with msn messenger file transfer working. If yes can u send me a screenshot of your setup. pete_1_2_3@hotmail.com

Thanks, any other ideas will be appriciated.
