Hi Everyone,
Has anyone had any luck with refurbished
pc laptops? It will mainly be used for word processing ,statistics and internet. There is a refurbished one avail with a K62 for about $1200. Any suggestions and vendors that you would recommend would also be appreciated..
Thanks again....

Depends on the hdd size, amt of RAM and video. If it has 64-128 and a 6GB hdd, then maybe, otherwise it seems a bit steep in price. Never used a refurbed laptop. That is one thing I might be a bit wary of since they are much more delicate as well. What is the warranty time?

A friend of mine bought a gateway PII laptop refurbished and has had no problems, for 3 years now. He uses it for hours daily (docked)as his main computer. All he's ever done to it is add some RAM.

Daveleau makes a very good point on the warranty. You can't just rip into a laptop as easily to replace parts, and they typically are more expensive or specialized anyway. Although you could probably easily add memory if you found a bargain with only 32mb.. check and make sure it's upgradable, though.
At the price you were given, many laptops can be had for just one or two hundred dollars more, new, warranty, etc. You just have to hunt them down online or look for specials in local stores.
If you really need it now.. do what you have to do. If you can wait just two or three months for the pre- and post-holiday season sales, you could get more for the same amount of money.

Depending on what you want, you could purchase a brand new laptop for not much more money.
Check out this for example:

Using the "Build-A-Laptop" option, I was able to configure the following system for $1243 plus s/h:
AMD K6-2+ 550
128 MB Memory
12 GB Hard Drive
1.44 Floppy
24x CD-ROM
56k Modem
AC Adapter
Windows Millennium
1 Year Warranty
Much better deal than a refurb in my opinion.
Good Luck,

As a comparison, here's what I bought new about 3 months ago:
Toshiba Satellite 1605CDS
AMD K62-450
96MB RAM
4.5GB HDD
24X CD-ROM
12.1" Dual Scan screen
ATI Rage LT Pro AGP-2X graphics
56K Internal modem
AC adaptor/battery charger
2 card slots, USB, Parallel, Serial, & PS2 ports
Internal floppy
Win 98SE
1-year warranty
Bought it at Outpost.com for $999 (w/32MB RAM) + $99 for 64MB more RAM
Total: $1098
Includes free overnight shipping
Also got some pretty good software and a $90 carry case for free.
I'd buy new, if I were you.
Good luck! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Thank you for all the info..I thought going with a refurb esp at that price needed a little looking into. A coworker of mine also visited this site/forum for the first time the other day and will find this thread helpful, he needs to purchase a laptop for work..
Thanks again,
Breeze :-)
