I have a P233 that`s giving me grief. On booting it displays the message "error loading kernel reinstall windows" i`ve tried scanreg with no luck / safe mode just ends up displaying "it is now safe to shut down" I am trying to reinstall Win 98 over the top of the existing install so i dont lose settings or data but i`m now getting the message compressed volume / drive remove disk cache (i cant boot to do that) so i ignore and carry on but end up with "operating system already installed you must run upgrade version" AAARRGHH!!!! Isnt there a file in windows / sys you can delete to enable an install??? Help!!

How about just deleting windows instead so you can install a fresh copy and still keep your data intact, might have to reinstall some programs but if you have the cd's then you can reinstall them easily.

Here's how, startup with a bootdisk make sure deltree.exe is on your bootdisk if not copy it from some other machine from the windows/command folder onto your bootdisk then type

deltree /y c:\windows c:\progra~1

After its done type SYS C: to get fresh system files onto the hard drive then run setup to install windows again with your data still intact on your hard drive. This way you'll get rid of bad system files completely.

I`ll give that a bash...saves doing a reformat.
