i just recently read about the cpu running hotter with the 1004c bios update. i would like to update because i dont like waiting for the promise controller to load. why does it run hotter? is there any other way to eliminate the time it takes to load the promise controller? i have a 20.4 gb ata100 maxtor on it.

The upgraded BIOS provides for DISABLING the ATA100 controller to speed up the boot time......obviously something you DON'T want to do, since you are using it with your ATA100 hard drive. Install the latest Promise driver from the ASUS website....it fixes the long boot times. Stick with BIOS ver 1003 for better cooling....it implements HLT commands to the CPU at idle by default, where (for whatever reason) ver 1004x does not.

That may be where you read it from in the first place. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm useing 1004c now because it solves shut down and restart problems I've been haveing. I hope they allow PCI Master Read Caching to be enabled in future BIOS', as that's what causes the temp difference. With 1004 you can enable this setting, but if you go back into the bios, it's been set back to disabled.
