Does the winME upgrade have to be installed ontop of 98 or can you do a fresh install and just supply it win 98 when it asks for it to proove you have it in the first place. i'm not too keen on installing one OS ontop of another.
Am i being paranoid as i have heard quite good things about installing ME.

Yes, you can do a clean install with the WinME step up. Just have the Win98 disk handy when you run setup.

Cheers! makes it sound a little more enticing!
Yes you can Upgrade Win98 to ME. Be sure you buy the upgrade cd and not the Full Version CD because if you use the Full version CD you must first format your hard drive and you will lose all of you data.

TLP, what's this about formatting your hard drive? In no way do you have to format your hard drive to re/install windows! If your going to reinstall windows for a fresh copy, just install windows in a directory such as WinMe and not Windows. Once installation is done, delete the Windows dir, and there you go! You DO NOT have to format your hard drive.

Or, slap a copy of Redhat on it and go all out.

Speaking of linux, saw a good T-shirt today:
There's nothing wrong with Windows 2000 - that Linux can't fix.

I read once you could upgrade with a full version CD. "IF" I remember right it said you could rename the file win.com to win.bak and then upgrade with the full version.
I think that's what I remember. You might try it.
BTW: I upgraded Win98SE with the new ME standard upgrade [not the step-up] and it worked great.
