Wow!

I've been reading a lot of posts here where the members have said "remove me" or "cancel my membership" or something similar, but each of those people seems to still retain their membership status and profile.

Does the administrator or the moderator even notice this stuff? Why are these people still listed as members?

How many real members do we have? The home page says over 22,000, but I never even see a hundred logged in.

Log in here, guys, and prove that you still exist!

There's no real reason to cancel someones membership. If they don't want ot post they just don't post.

Much of the membership comes from people that signed up and asked one question, never to be heard from again.

Sure would be nice if we could get concerned members like yourself to answer a few questions in the tech forums:)

Perhaps, but I've seen several here that requested it.

I'm not sure I understand why those requests are ignored.

I wouldn't cancel anyone's membership because they just didn't post. A request is different.

Bob please give detailed explanation as to why this is of importance to you.

I had a membership at a health spa a while back. I found a different spa that was closer to my home. Didn't matter to me if they cancelled my membership or not. I just didn't go back.

I guess I should step in at this point... While I obviously hope people will stick around, and that those who are not sure they want to will leave the door open for themselves to change their minds down the line, I will, of course, respect members' wishes and close the account of anyone who asks me to. But I simply don't have the time to scour through posts and look for those requests in various threads.

So if anyone feels a great need to have his/her account deleted, please contact me directly by email (housen@sharkyextreme.com), ICQ (36900566), or AIM (hmartok). Just please make sure this is what you want, as deleting an account is a lot easier than restoring it.

Take care,

Housen

I'm still around every now and then. I check posts with one or two replies, to give someone a hand that hasn't gotten one. Other than that, I come around and read up on people's emotions. I migrated to techimo, but I see no reason to never come back here. This is where I started, I'd like to hang around every now and then. I don't want this place to die, but don't look to me to save it.

Housen:

I kind of like this site. I am good old s4 from HardwareCentral. You may or may not remember me. I will continue to visit this board unless one of those great big nasty ugly annimated banners is placed down the side of the screen like HWC has. I am completely turned off by those advertising banners that are so BIG there. I really don't have anything against you personally. I would hope that this site can continue to have some freedom of speech. If it does, I will keep coming back. If at some point HWC gets rid of those banners, I might consider helping the newbies with some of their questions again.

The reason I have not been posting here is because I am waiting to see if the board is going to become like HWC is otherwise I will post.

Housen Maratouk
10-26-2001, 08:08 AM
I can't make any assurances about advertising on any site. I have no control over what kinds of ad positions get placed on the site I run, Sharky Extreme, let alone all the other sites I'm just the forums guy on. All I can say is that if advertisers will pay for a position that has been designated as a sellable position by the company, there is a good chance a site wil have it.

Housen

Hickman
10-26-2001, 09:40 AM
I understand that. If the banner at HWC, for example, was not animated there would be a lesser annoyance factor involved. It detracts from my attention when reading posts. CNN.com is using a banner that is similiar in size and position on their site. Theirs is not jumping around or constantly changing. Having ads is one thing, but if they annoy people they are not accomplishing anything. Animated ads are annoying. I know the site is there for one purpose to make money, but if you really want to make money and get people to like the site you have to take into account the human factor.

The human factor is this. People like to exchange conversation. Let's say someone is talking about their cpu and they find that they meet someone from their hometown on the same board. Let's say they exhange a few pleasant comments about it. At HWC the first thing that is done is to lock the thread.

Letting little things go and dealing with major ones is a better stategy than locking every thread that has some off topic in it. Sure if a thread gets out of hand it needs to be dealt with or if someone cusses someone out they need to be banned. That's what the job of the moderators and admin is to keep order. I think it can be done without keeping all off topic discussions out.

I know you are going to say that you put up with a whole year of people trashing HWC. You are correct in saying that. However, if you take a closer look at what happened you might see what went wrong. The mods that were assigned did not do that good of a job. You needed people that were actually dedicated to making tough decisions and locking threads. The instant name calling began, the mod should have stepped in and told the person not to do it. If the person kept it up, they should have been banned permanently with no chance of getting back in. Any threads that got out of hand with name calling and cussing should have been moved to a hidden forum kept just for that purpose. When someone later denied the reasons why they were banned, you could have shown them exactly what their comments were that caused it. Another thing is that some of the mods edited or deleted posts without saying anything. If they would have made a brief comment about why this or that was done, the members would not have gotten as upset.

I know it takes a lot of effort to keep an off topic forum going, but if you have real moderators that actually moderate and they keep keep a good eye on their forum instead of goofing off, ot can bring in a lot of people and traffic.

I hope you do not think I am trying to cause problems for you. I'm not. I just want you to understand it from the perspective of a long time member even though I haven't been here long. I know that you have only so much control over what goes on with the sites like HWC.

Bob please give detailed explanation as to why this is of importance to you.

It's way too easy to opt-in to things these days. They even opt you in to a lot of things without even a request to do so.

But it's never easy to opt-out. Ever try to dump AOL? Get off a spam list? Replace Internet Explorer?

It's very sad to see Sysopt follow that same example.

But, thanks to Housen, there are now some instructions posted.

Thanks,
Bob

Sorry Steve... I couldn't resist. Had to come out of lurking even to post that one.

Why am I lurking? I guess it sort of is like rubber-necking at a bad car accident. Maybe that's not it... The aftermath here is a lot more amusing than at a car accident.

I am a new member of this forum. I have given some input and have received advise. I like what I see. This is a great place to share ideas, shake up a few feathers, and enjoy the fact there are others that enjoy the technical side of pc ownership.

There is nothing more frustrating when you are working on a problem and have no one to bounce ideas off of.

I started out with a Zilog Z-80 processor. Learned a lot about the architecture and have been nosing around ever since. There was no one to talk to back then. Books were very hard to find. And there was no Internet, as we know it today.

I moved on to the 6502 processor and learned a few things about Apple. This chip was loads of fun to play with. I used me first 300 baud modem. That was pretty cool.

The 8088 was treat, learning about segmentation. Wow! Someone had fun designing this architecture.

The 80186 and 80286 were interesting to play with.

The 80386 had enough power to run windows 3.1.

The 80486 was the first platform to have the ziff socket and thus have upgrade strategy. I don't believe in the upgrade strategy. By the time I am ready to upgrade, the technology had changed so much that I needed to buy a new .

The Pentium was the first real solution for business usage. I used a P133Mhz for years at work.

Cyrix always gave me heartburn. I had the 200+ that ran at 150Mhz. Too many problems and the fpu wasn't up to par with Intel.

AMD never impressed me until the Athlon. Now I own one and is my primary system. I am learning about AMD. These new processors run hot. Cooling has become a very important ingredient to ownership.

These are the things that interest me. These are the things I see discussed on this site.

I'm here...was gone for awhile (too busy) but I'm back for ?????- I go into Sysopt spurts of posting madly (including writing stupid stuff with out thinking first!!). I kind of become addicted to it for short periods of a few days for hours on end especially if I'm on vacation. I like being able to help if I can, but there are so many Ultimate members who are total Gurus and know completely deep technicalities, that I could never imagine delving into...I admire that! However ,at times they need a simple mind to figure out a problem that they've just got too involved in- Probably because they went to MIT & Harvard at the same time at the age of 16...

I said this would happen a long time ago.The big corperation that is in back of this saw the influence being generated by this entire place and is now trying to use it to increase their profit margin. You will see it leaning in one direction, pushing a little more and more in the direction they desire otherwise why do this house cleaning.I am no wiz and don't have a lot of posts I do read a lot of stuff here and a lot of other forums, have tried to help on occasion with my limited knowledge,I am constantly trying things (that usually don't work)and have asked for help sometimes responded to and sometimes not. Will continue to come as I have in the past.Maybe one of the really good wizards in the old sysopt gang will do a search to find out who owns who, maybe sysopt is owned by bill now.

i just wish that more people would do equipment reviews. i think it's the best part of sysopt & the first place i go to before buying any new equipment (and i tell all my friends to go here first for user reviews before buying, also).

imagine all the grief that could have been avoided by people contemplating that infamous epox mobo that had a power supply rail problem!

and yeah, i'm on quite a few forums. but i remember when sysopt was kinda quiet - and so, as a pc technician and avid pc user, i want to share a little of my knowledge with others. or at least post a hyperlink to point someone in the right direction.

having just moved, i want to get back to using my pc - gotta stroke the keys to stay in shape - because i want to start studying for my mcse.

I joined this forum to learn and offer help. I've been working with microcomputers since the TSR-80 and Apple II+ days. There are a lot more folks getting involved today than back then. Use to be that you had to hunt down expensive books to satisfy questions on how things worked. Nowadays, you can ask a question on a forum, such as this one, and chances are someone has done it and is available to share their experiences.

Fshanda it appears as if Internet.com bought out Sysopt and then fired all of it's senior members. They have all moved www.techimo.com which is why it seems slightly dead around here. I would post more, but I just learnd how to turn one of these thing on, I think:confused : I do feel this is a very good place to learn a little, maby before long I'll learn how to catch this mouse thing. :D Let me say I learned real fast not to let Compusa even see it muchless touch it. I brought this thing home, after letting compusa put in a vidio card and some norton stuff, I knew I was in troble when I saw the clock wasn't set. Anyway norton never installed right, keeped on saying must be superviser, with the help of my bro. we tried with no luk to unistall reinstall norton. On my oun I got the how to from norton and did it. Not two days later the thing freked whent real slow locked up a lot, thats when I learned about restore, how cool, It did not work!! said no changes have been made from the day I bought it. Lord and behold I learnd about "system recovery" The fellow that told me that would not tell me how, I kinda don't blame him but I found out and now its been working 100-times better than when it came home from 'THE-PROS". Needless to say I got a good start on puting in programs, BUT NOW I HAVE ALL YOU GREAT PEOPLE TO TAKE MY HAND FROM HERE thanks.

Those images are called Avitar's. When you reach 150 posts, you are allowed to use your own Avitar.

I'd like to thank everyone involved for making this site an international community of PC enthusiasts - people willing to
spend time and effort to share their expertise and/or experiences
with other members.
When I post a problem, I can't wait to get responses from fellow
members, administrators, or moderators. And if I can help
someone, I'll throw in my two cents.
I've built 6-7 systems, and have found that these things are a
helluva lot more complicated than plugging in devices, and loading
operating systems and device drivers. (I hope I'm not alone in
my thinking).
Anyway, thanks again for making these forums a great place for
information exchange, comaraderie, and some pretty good
humor as well.

bill1971: I share your sentiments. There is no greater joy for a pc enthusiast than building a system and sharing the knowledge with others. I just built a system back in October/November time frame and rekindled my love for this stuff. I had so much fun that I am thinking of building systems on the side. Not much money in it, but a lot of satisfaction.

Every time i have a problem with my 'puter, I head straight here.

I lurk often and post questions when I need help. If I knew more, I would offer help.

I have yet to find more computing knowledge so readily and willingly accessible in one place and frequently recommend it to others.

As a newbie and rare poster, I understand perfectly clearly how the members rating system works, what it means and how it affects the amount of faith which I put in the posts. Not that newbies can't be knowledgeable.

To those regularly posting members, moderators and administrators whose input and hard work makes this site so good, I pass my thanks and my plea that you will long continue.

I've got to say that this forum has really, truly, blown me away! There's a lot of good natured spirit here, not to mention the technical support. I've viewed and posted to other forums and, like all of us, have seen some mean spirited people posting ugly replies to others. I don't see that here. I also enjoy very much the fact that we have so very many different people, from all walks of life, and from all over the globe. It's all been a gas!

Thought this seems like a good place to say Hi :)
Not worth starting a new thread for it, and this thread is so big and cumbersome many users won't even bother to read it which seems like a perfect place to post a stupid Hello World message.

I have a fair bit of technical support needs as well as having quite a bit of experience fixing stuff so hopefully the tech support forums can be a 2 sided thing with me :D

Yah I'm here and its one of my favorite sites.I don't like to install "chat" programs but want to socialize and have an interest in learning and applying my knowledge in a support community.Sysopt does well for both.
I first visited this site a couple years ago and there were really a lot of great technical peolpe far above my level. It seems that a lot of them left but who cares! There are a lot of pretty good ones here now and they are maybe even more willing to help out.
What's odd to me is when these guys pop in who I've never seen a single post from that have like "Ultimate Member" or whatever listing.Hey... if they are such "Gurus" why don't they ever solve any real tech. problems here anymore?(LOL!)

Hard to believe I missed a thread 10 pages long heh heh. I don't know the history of Sysopt since I only discovered this site a few months back, but this place has been a great resource for me. Originally, it was the database information here, but now, its all about the forums. I've asked questions and have received help. I've read other people's questions and have given my input for the subjects I am familiar with. I come here everyday and try to post something worthwhile. It doesn't happen all the time though. I do agree with what some of the others have said though, you should frequent other forums because you will increase the likelihood of obtaining the answers to your questions quickly. But not all forums are created equal and Sysopt members make this one helluva place to be.

How many real members do we have? The home page says over 22,000, but I never even see a hundred logged in.

Log in here, guys, and prove that you still exist!

Bob Bobthetroll,
How about some stats on the number of logins, and number of posts, sorted by users? I suspect that 10 or 20 percent of the members contribute 80% of the posts. Others (newbies, site surfers) come with a specific question or problem, get what they need, and (almost) never return. That's okay, as I'd rather get answers and suggestions from people who have some experience and knowledge.
