I have finally gotten hold of a better heat sink for my 700E, as everybody knows Intel supplied what looks like frag tape on their sinks to stick to the core of the processor. Cheap stuff..... How would I go about taking off safely the stock heatsink w/out messing up the processor. And also what would I use to take out the residue that the tape is definitely going to leave?

Thanks

usually the stuff gets softer when it is heated. run your comp for a while and take it off when it gets warm. as for the residue, use a some rubbing alcohol.

Yes, the residue will come off quite easily. If you have a Slot1 CPU, removing the retail heatsink is not for the feint-hearted. Socket 370s are a piece o' p!ss.

The 'frag tape' that comes with the retail CPU is 'adequate'. That's all. Best use some proper thermal paste, or better still, some Arctic Silver thermal paste and overclock that CPU to get it kicking azz!

Here's a link about removing the retail heatsink from a retail slot1 P3:

and here's a thread about what sort of temperature reductions can be achieved:

Thanks for info guys. I've got the 700E oc'd to 944 Mhz at 1.75v this is what I'm stuck with so far, anything higher brings the temp sky high especially with games (Quake and Colin Mc Rae Rally). Once more thanks.

Whats harder then gettin it off is using the **** stuff, I bought some (it aint cheap) to affix some ramsinks to my MX card, I think I got the goodstuff as its made by 3M, its about .005 in thickness and pretty hard to use, as a matter of fact I couldnt use it, I couldnt get the backing to separate, Arctic sil and gel Ca-glue to the rescue again...
(NOW I think maybe if I try it again, alittle heat might assist) I magnified it and picked at it for a **** hour, still couldnt get it off...
