I was looking for a solution to a strange problem while starting explorer or clicking in "look in" of the standard "open file" dialog box. Win98 was hanging for 3-5 seconds before responding, except when there was a CD or a DVD in my Hitachi DVD. A simple google search on "gd2500 slow explorer" gives me the answer. There is a know problem with the firmware version 011 (check it in "system properties" device manager tab then click on CD and finally on "properties") and a new firmware upgrade should be run to load version 012. Here are 2 texts found :
"Corrects sound pulsing and slow access/recognition of the drive" and
"Corrects 2 bugs : Pulsing sound through the speakers and slow explorer when opened without disk in the DVD-drive. Also works with Compaq GD-2500 and make the drive region free. Use the /c command to upgrade a Compaq drive."
Now, explorer starts within a second and I do not have to wait when I click the down arrow of "look in".
