I got a d-link dsb c100 for free with WinMe Step up ($50) along with a nice set of logitech speakers and about $200 of free software. Pretty good bang for the buck; and the camera works great for my needs which are next to nil. It just sits there ready to be used and never is.

I found (after trying out three or four other brand name cams) the Intel PC Camera Pro Pack worked the best for me. Good low light qualities, good fps, usable software that was'nt buggy, it's got a connector built in for your VCR or camcorder (for video capture.....you don't need to go out and buy a separate card), privacy shutter, etc. Only thing against it is price......a little on the high side, but not as high as some.

Hi, i'm thinking of buying a nice webcam,
that has the basic webcam functions such as recording a video and making a picture (both at 640x480) while keeping an acceptable framerate.

But which cam would be the best bang for buck??

I used the Logitech Quickcam Home and it worked great for video and for stills. USB and higher res.

I tried a logitech and returned it for an Intel. Shop around and compare.

I'm in total agreement with the Pilot. The Intel Pro Pack is what I purchased w/ a $30 dollar rebate to boot. Great features, software and performance. The video input eliminates the need for a video capture card, but if you don't need it the cheaper Intel Cam is an equally great performer.
