I was running Win2000 on an ECS K7AMA with a T-Bird 1.4Ghz with a Thermaltake Volcano 6CU+. The idle temps were hovering at around 45°C - 47°C.
I just installed WinXP and my idle temps have jumped to around 53°C to 56° while my mobo temps stayed about the same. Is this possible that XP is taxing the processor that much more to make the temps jump nearly 10°??!!! The only other change was to drop the sound card down a couple PCI slots.
What is a good safe temp for the 1.4 T-Bird?

Although still within the acceptable range for a Tbird, those are a bit high. Do you have ACPI installed in XP???

I have the MSI KT7 turbo Limited Mobo and the Athlon 1.4Ghz cpu and my temps run around 63C. According to the specs, 95C is the maximum temp.

i keep 30-36 setting and about 46 at max as long as you dont get past 60 its fine. But truly just let it get as hot as it can and when it starts lockingup then its too hot!

If you're that worried about the temp, you should get a little program called VCool. When my Athlon 1.3 was getting too hot, I downloaded VCool and now my temp idles at 30C and max at 48C. I love it.

Where do you find this VCool program. Can you post link.

Windows 2000 has a built-in sort of Vcool program, which lowers your idle temps. I think windows XP doesn't have this. It has no effect when playing intensive 3d-games or other intensive applications. Only idle temps are lower so it is not a solution for overclocking because when you use your cpu's speed it will overheat anyway.
Hope this helps,
Arthur.

You can get VCool at CNET in the download section. I use it and my temps as I type this are cpu 24c mobo 26c. My pc is an athlon tbird 1.4 oc'd to 1.54.:) or www.naggelgames.de/vcool/VCool.html

what program would you suggest for an alimagik 1 board as VCool only works on VIA chipsets.

It is true that when you use your pc at 100% use vcool doesn't work, but the rest of the time, like using word processors, surfing the net etc. it works just fine. It is an excellent addition to good cooling basics, which the people here will help you achieve.
My pc almost always runs below 34c unless I play games or run 3dmark 2001. And even then it doesn't reach temps past 52c.
I attrbute this to a decent cooling setup for my pc and the addition of VCool(which works very well with tbirds, try it):)
CPUCOOL might work with alimagik, but I'm not sure.
