Thanks Rhino302 10-21-2001, 11:15 AM Intel or AMD? toyota 10-21-2001, 11:20 AM Rhino not sure what it is, is there anywhere to look... Jumpy 10-21-2001, 11:42 AM Sure there is toyota. Go to control panel and then click on the systems icon. once it loads you will see a quick summary of system information. It should tell you what type of cpu you have. or you can watch very closely when you boot up. some bios will show the cpu information. toyota 10-21-2001, 11:48 AM I sometimes want to kick myself, Amd k-6 3d processor... Thanks krazefinn 10-21-2001, 07:08 PM Nope, won't go. CompuQe is absolutely the worst OEM builder, as they utilize very proprietary hardware, neutered bios, and bloated software that will not allow any tweaking of bios, reflashing, or o/cing at all. Their reasoning is that allowing this would increase their warranty liability (already very high, and terrible tech support, even below e-machines per Nov. PCWorld report), and secondly, if you actually could tweak/upgrade/clock thir ****, you wopuld be less inclined to purchase a upgrade. Run fast, run far, mebbe try to sell it and build your own. My presario brought me nightmares, will NEVER EVER BUY ANYTHING from them AGAIN! Most OEM's do this, but not quite to the extreme of big Orange. I even discovered that most of their hardware is not replaceable by commonly aaaavailable stuuf on the market; had to pay triple for their replacements. This applied to the mobo, psu, case, modem, DVD, CDRW, etc. None of the driver updates, bios updates, etc were applicable. And when they advertise, that their's is truly upgradeable, what they mean it's such a piece of KrAp that anything else you could buy IS AN UPGRADE! BTW did I mention I hate compuQe? They lie, the're ignorant of theeir own installed hardware or specs, tech support couldn't find their face wwith both hands, customer satisfaction requests are totally ignored, advertising is patently false, the bloatware on their recovery discs is so bug ridden and bogged down with useless junk (which unbeknownst to the user is calling home all the time-must have took lessons from billyG and co at MS/windoZe). Just don't get me started...do what I did, sell it, cut your losses, and start building your own. Not only will you be rewarded with the satisfaction of doing it yourself, you'll know what ya got, will be able to fix/overclock it, and upgrade it as new hardware /bios /driver updates comes along. Plus it will cost you considerably less in total cost of owner****. Oh, paardon me, my freudian slip must be showing! Jumpy 10-21-2001, 08:33 PM WOW, I guess you don't like COMPAC. I never owned one and I guess I will never own one now. Aren't they getting out of the computer making business all together now? krazefinn 10-21-2001, 08:52 PM Yeah, HP is buying them. Just what we need less competition, and more monolithic usury like MS. Inhell. Ad nauseum. My opinion is based on my experience, their network/business rigs seem to be somewhat better, but even there they do limit much of the flexibility, and design their systems to create a captive component resale market...all for substantially higher cost than from commonly available outside vendors. They are big enough to buy in huge quanities, and demand that the hardware is propritary. Just as their software is...live and learn I am greatly indebted to them for teaching me how NOT build a pc, and giving me the impetus to learn system building on my own. Rhino302 10-21-2001, 10:50 PM OK, if you have a K6-2, a BIOS flash should enable you to put in a K6-2+ or K6-3+ around 550 mhz. But the L2 cache would make a great performance difference, not just the added mhz. Someone at AMDZone did this. Not totally sure aoubt a k6-2+, but a k6-3 should work. toyota 10-21-2001, 11:26 PM Thanks for the help, have had a lot of trouble out of this compaq..been looking around for another computer, like you said mabe build my own.... thanks again smoothsailing 10-24-2001, 10:50 PM Crazy is RIGHT! I'm a service tech for a big Laser Printer Mfg.company, and in addition to servicing the printers, I work on all digital front end and network stuff. Run Forest,Run when it comes to Comcr%p. Ive had everything from dead hard drives out of the box, to dead MOBO's and ps's that go boink at the first hint of a brown out. I recently had a monitor show up with the incorrect mounting base packed in the box. Compaq refused to address the issue. Proprietary ram, very limited bios's and those awful RomPaq's, all add up to a bad experience. The only success I have had is in UPS protected computer rooms, where once you get the OS and apps loaded, DO NOT TURN IT OFF, cuz it may not come back. Sell, trade, or give the trash man your Compaq, and build from scratch. The rewards are many, and the knowledge gained gives you a leg up when your friend's Compaq quits. This also gives you the opportunity to put whatever quality products you decide to, and leaves the door open for upgrades when you can afford it. C rappy O ld M achine P uked A nd Q uit Good luck..
