Will a slotA Athlon heatsink fit on my PII-300 slot1 S.E.C.C. processor?Without making modifications to it?I have my processor currently overclocked to 540 mhz at 2,29V.I can get it to 558mhz (hope I someday will be able to get it to 600) and the voltage is so high because I'm still letting it burn in.
I have a big heatsink on it now with 2 5cm fans and 1 6cm fan,but it's bad.It has that gap between the processor and the hs.I have already tried to lap it,but it's to much work.It a big surface and has those dots sticking out (so you can put it only on the processor in one way) that makes it even harder to lap it properly.
The reason I ask is that I can get a great Athlon heatsink with a Xtra high 6500rpm 5cm fan for only $15.I would put the 6cm fan from the other cooler on it and I would buy another one for it for $2.I could use the high speed fan for the back of my videocard (I already have one of those on the front of it).
I would have a great cooler for only $17.

I don't think it will just pop right on "without making modifications".
I wouldn't say that what you have is bad, I never got those speeds out of my PII-300 and I don't think you'll see 600 without exotic/aggressive cooling.
It will definetly not fit on without modifications. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Too bad it can't be done with/O modifications.I guess it would be easier to make my current heatsink flat.
I have an 8cm fan in the front, and an 8cm Sunon fan in the top (it's right above my processor/cooler).I also have 3 fans on my processor (PII-300,currently @ 540) with big heatsink:1 6cm fan and 2 5cm fans (one 4700rpm and the other 5700rpm).The PII-300 processor is the famous type SL2W8,which has all the 'ingredients' of a PII-450,except for the housing.Which gives one problem:the metal plate doesn't touch the cache chips.
When I tried to get that metal plate off a month ago,I nearly killed the processor.I made a cut in the circuitryboard.I wanted to put pieces of metal between the plate an the cache. That way I might be able to get it at 600.I am not trying to do that again. Not that's worth so much, but I can't afford another one at the moment.
I know my system temperature is never higher than 29C (I have an Abit VA6,maybe the board registers a lower temperature than it really is).I wouldn't really know about the processor temp. because I can't find a good place to put the sensor.I've felt it with my hand (the metal plate).I don't think it gets above the 45C.
Btw,I once got the thing at 600mhz.Too bad it was a 100mhz BX board.I think that must have killed my Quantum Bigfoot 4gb (it was a piece of sh*t anyway). It actually even ran like this for a couple of minutes (it didn't boot in Windoze ofcourse).I didn't know about pushing the insert button yet to load default settings,so it took a while to set the speed back to 450,because it kept locking up when I tried to change it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif .

I've been checking this thing out again, and I find evidence everywere that Athlon slotA SECC and PII slot1 SECC is exactly the same.
Check this site: http://www.coolerguys.com/
They have a link to PII SECC1 coolers, but it leads to Athlon slotA cooler section.I think that's some evidence that it's all the same.
I saw reviews on GlobalWin VOS32,that supports PII/Athlon/PIII.There are 2 ways to attach the cooler one way for PII SECC1/Athlon,the other way PIII.
reviews on http://www.tweak3d.net/reviews/globalwin/vos32/ and http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cooling/gwvos32/gwvos32_pg-1.html .
Btw,that GW-VOS 32 is available for $30 and can also be used for PIII so will be nice when I upgrade my processor.I think my next processor will be a PIII between 650 and 750mhz.And with this cooler I can be very sure it will fit.I just hope I can find one in the hole called 'Holland' I live...
Here is another PII/Athlon cooler. It seems like a lot Athlon coolers work on PII,but some don't.I suspect that because some sites say with one Athlon cooler that it also works on PII,and with another cooler they don't say it does (they don't say it does or doesn't work).
Btw,I found a picure of the cooler I currently use: http://www.kingwin.com/fan-s1.htm .It's the upper picture.As I said before,I totally modified it,but doesn't help much because it's bad.
I also found a picture of the Athlon cooler I can get for $15 : http://www.kingwin.com/k-7.htm .It's the lower picture.
