Maybe by about 5ms. All my 3 home systems have lan cards, with no performance hit. Mntsnow 09-21-2000, 07:13 PM Actually depending on how you have the Network card configured WILL effect the boot speed. for example: If you are using a DHCP server (dynamic IP addressing) it will slow down your boot time greatly. This is due to the time needed to contact the server to obtain a IP addy. The more systems on the server the longer this can take due to the search time needed to find a IP addy that is not in use. So in short..Use Static IP's whenever you can http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif NDC 09-21-2000, 07:46 PM Yeah, I agree with MTNSNOW. When my cable ISP is down, my system would just sit there for about a minute looking for the DHCP server to connect on my NT4. My cable ISP goes down one in a while. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif reddog4629 09-23-2000, 06:10 PM This 3Com 905b PCI added almost a minute to my boot time! Instead of selecting "Obtain IP automatically" in tcp/ip network settings I entered my IP and subnet mask manually. No go-killed my connection. Any settings I'm missing? DOCSIS cable modem W'98 SP1 IE 5.0 skywalker[TSG] 09-23-2000, 06:27 PM some do some dont the wizdom of skywalker has spoken NDC 09-23-2000, 06:33 PM I use a Realtek RTL8139 Ethernet Adapter and as long as my cable ISP isn't down, it will connect to the DHCP server in seconds. Try using Realtek. It's very cheap also. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Mntsnow 09-23-2000, 09:00 PM Reddog, When you go to manually setup your TCP/IP connection you will need to set up everything not just the IP and Subnet, You will also need to setup the DNS info and the Gateway, the DNS suffexes ect. You can get the info from your ISP to set these up (as long as your ISP allows you to have a STATIC ip address) reddog4629 10-01-2000, 06:27 AM I set EVERYTHING up manually(I missed a lot of stuff before) and I can't see any difference. Must just be this 3COM 905b NIC-huh? Donkey 10-02-2000, 02:09 AM Yeah! i've got a couple of 3com ISA nics in my boxes and they are slowing boot time down a lot. Not connecting to the net looking for a server as they are just connecting two home computers together as a lan. I've specified i.p. address and sub mask should i bother with all the other stuff as well. If so what should i set it as? Rod SysOpt.com
