They don't "require" it, but it will run better if on a high quality PS.

I got a Duron running on a 250W POS one that came with a Generic Case, and my Duron is running FINE http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Same here. My Duron 650@900/A7v is running fine with a generic 250w power supply. I've got 2HDD's, an FDD, an LS120, a CDROM, a tape backup, and a total of seven fans running without even a hiccup. I'm installing a CD/RW soon.....maybe that'll throw it.....we'll see.

Hi there

I bought an AMD Athlon 700+ASUS A7V a month ago, and boy did i have problems. It took me 3 weeks before it was up and running.

It wouldnīt boot. It started and resetted. The BIOS alarm sounded like an ambulance. I tried everything. Then i focused on the Cabinet - i bought a Codegen 300W cabinet with the processor and motherboard.

I send it back - and received a Noname cabinet (300W). It didnīt work. It worked well with some of my friends motherboards, but not my A7V.

I send it back - and finally bougth a Aopen HQ8 full tower 300W - and presto!! everything works fine.

A cabinet is not just a cabinet. The PSUīs are so different in quality.

Does AMD Duron Processors truly requires a selected brand of case power supplies?

I have a Duron 700 on a FIC AZ 11 board. When I did my upgrade i bought a new case with a generic 250 watt power supply. Things worked ok but since I was adding a CD-RW and I already had a modem, network card, 2nd harddrive etc. It has 245 megs of PC 100 ram. I decided to buy and install a 300 watt TurboCool power supply from PcPowerCooling. It wasn't cheap( @$85) but IT WAS WORTH IT. The system runs rock solid and cooler. This is a Cadillac power supply. Some say it's too pricey, but I haven't had one lick stitch of a problem.

I should have said 256 megs of ram. Sorry!

Yup.

I use PC Power & Cooling PSUs as well. The few extra bucks you pay for one is worth the peace of mind it buys you!

Listen, not all power supplies are created equal. That's why AMD has gone to tremendous effort and cost to qualify the various PSUs for compatibility with the Athlon. If you use an "unapproved" supply, it might have enough current limit margin (oomph!!) on the +5V or +3.3V to allow your mobo to work properly. Another exact same PSU but from a different date code/mfg. lot might not work.

The bottom line is if it works for you and you haven't got transient system problems (crashes, reboots, phantoms, etc.), then godd for you! Keep using the supply. But on the other hand if you're purchasing a new case or PSU, you're best off buying a know-compatible unit elsewise you'll end up returning it and putting up with hassles!!
