I having been backing up all my apps and games in zip files on my second hard-drive (d:\) which I use only as a backup drive. There are no CRC errors when i extract them, but when i format my c:\(primary drive) and reinstall windows, the zip files on the backup drive all have CRC errors. I dont understand why there is nothing wrong with them till I format.

Have you tried reinstalling the Zip extractor? It sounds like there may be something wrong with the extractor. CRC errors occure when the Zip file cannot be read correctly due to the zip file being corrupted, but you are saying that you only get CRC errors when you format the c: drive, but works well when you don't. So we know that the zip file isn't corrupted, but the extractor or the OS may be the cause.

My first suggestion os to reinstall the zip extractor after you have fully uninstalled the program. If you still get the error, I would also suggest that you try extracting the zip files on another computer or try reinstalling Windows, because Windows may be causing a conflict also. Post back after you try this and tell me how it goes.

It still didn't work, I have formatted and reinstalled windows many times in the past and it never makes a difference. But it doesn't effect every zip file. I use winzip 8, but have also used winrar and winace and it doesnt make a difference. My OS is Win 98.

Sorry, I just can't think what could be the problem at the moment. That is one very odd problem you are having. Keep an eye topic though, I'm sure someone who has come across this problem and found a work-around this problem may be able to help you. Sorry. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

As far as fixing your zips, I can't help you, but I can make a suggestion for the future.

Use winRAR to create your archives. WinRAR can add in information that will allow it to repair the archive if it becomes corrupted. It WORKS, too. I don't even use Winzip anymore. It's not even on my computer. WinRAR is so much better. When you have a whole directory tree compressed, Winzip gives you no clue. WinRAR lets you see the whole tree while it's still zipped.

FYI- CRC stands for "cyclic redundancy check". It is basically just calculating a kind of checksum on each file as it unzips it to see if it is the same as when it went in. If there is even one byte difference, then it won't extract. With large files, you increase the chances of that happening exponentially. WinRAR allows you to split large files into smaller files which are more easily handled by the program. Less chance of corruption.

There are many other advantages to using WinRAR, but I won't list them all. Sorry I can't help with your present problem, though. I, myself, was given a copy of Star Trek Armada (zipped) by a friend, and I get CRC errors every time.
