I have a Seagate/Connor 1.1GB hard disk drive what i use to backup my files etc....
It is set to secondary slave D:\.
After a few days i get lost files on it, the wierd thing is its the same set of files each time!! I use scandisk and it finds lost files on the hard drive and saves them as File000.chk etc..... When i rename them with the correct file name .doc .jpg etc.. they work again until next time. Its the same files each time, i've renamed them and they are my archives do i don't use them often.
I have zero filled the drive, fdisked it (win98 boot disk) and then formatted it using the boot disk too but the problem comes back.

My Pc Spec is at http://www.overclockit.ic24.net/myspec.htm

Is the drive on its way out? I use Inoculate IT AV software and this found no viruses, i did a thorough scandisk too and no problems were found. No bad clusters etc..

Any suggestions? Could i need to reinstall my system from scratch on C:\ ?

Thanx - RobUK

Just a thought to try. Next time scandisk makes the File000.chk etc, live them alone.

Do a copy of the files to the correct name. I use DOS to do this. Copy file000.chk yourfile.xxx or whatever the correct filename is for the particular .chk file. Doing this will leave the files scandisk thinks are bad in their original places on the harddrive and the copy puts them in a new place on the drive.

Try this and see if scandisk stops thinking they are bad. Could be you have a bad place on the drive..who knows. Not to hard to do this little procedure to see what happens.

Oh man that old stuff, I would throw something like that away as soon I get a new drive that is 20-30 time bigger in capacity and cost about 100 bucks. like he say it usually is good idea to leave those filechk.000 etc alone and move them to a directory called badfile. they are usually pretty small anyway. your harddrive is giving off too much heat so it likely to have corrupt data every so often.

Win_98 could you please explain how it is that you deducted the drive in question was too hot and corrupting data????????

RobUK.....its a little early to give up on the drive too in my opinion. Just because its older and small, doesn't make it worthless.

How did you come to the conclution my hard drive is overheating? If it is i'll move it and put a fan on it!
I'll leave the file000.chk .... next time and see if anything happens.

Thanx everyone, any more suggestions?

I thought that when scan disk found corrupt/damaged/lost files, it saved them as File000.chk, File001.chk, etc. If this is the case, you are restoring and renaming files that are already corrupt.
Try renaming File000.chk to File000.doc and open it with Word. Cut and paste the information into a newly created .doc file, then save it with the correct filename. For the .jpg files, open them then re-save them with a new name, then discard the original.

There are many people here who can clarify/correct my theory... Just chime in anytime http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
