Simple questions: Is there a chance that it will wreck my computer? Will it improve performance?

Thereīs nothing safe in this world.

But yes it will improve performance (your machine starts faster and becomes more stable) if you - like me, install a lot of s... thats uninstallable.

Try Tucows.com - Windows ME section and look under registry cleaners. Thereīs a program called NBKG by a russian bloke, and itīs said to be better than regclean and Cleansweep - havenīt tried it yet though.

I'd have to agree - in the majority of systems - regclean will improve performance, but don't expect miracles -

pulling junk out of the registry will improve your post and boot speed -

There's still nothing like actually using add/remove programs to install stuff and UN install stuff as you go..... If you've been doing that all along - you probably won't be helped much by regclean.....

I find it makes the most impact when I'm cleaning a system up after bone-head users who will download and install ANYTHING with a pretty icon off the web.....

About safety - some registrys collapse just by opening them - and they would have failed anyway.... some registries can be opened and edited dozens of times without ever encountering a problem.... It also has to do with actively performing scandisks & defrags and virus sweeps on a regular basis to test disk integrity.....

You know what's been going on in your system.... some users format and reinstall their systems about once every 7 months as a matter of course and see this as normal - but they download and try new stuff off the web or beta-test for MS - they just know to expect it and don't panic when their system does crash.....

It's kind of like asking yourself if you could go in an replace the water-pump in your car yourself or not.....

I haven't seen any noticable differences. But be careful, I've seem MS regclean screw up my registery on certain systems. It seems to work good in certain systems with Win98, Win2k, NT4 and do mischief on others. This happened to me several times. But the good thing is that it will make a backup of the last registery setting in the directory where regclean is located. I've noticed the System Mechanic does a more reliable job for cleaning registery. I haven't had a problem yet on any of the systems I cleaned the registery with System Mechanic. There are other features that come with System Mechanic besides the regcleaner. There is clear junk files, clear internet history, optimize MTP setting, find duplicate files, Window startup options, etc.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Look here if you want to learn more about the program:

I haven't regcleaned in a long time. The reason is that every time I did, I ended up formatting and reinstalling. I know people for whom it works great, but it never has for me. I have used many different programs to do it, too. Norton's Windoctor has caused major instability in my system every time it has run. But that is just my own experience and I'm sure it really is a great program (read: no libel suits, please http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif ).
