I had to format & reinstall a few days ago & I went to load some data that I backed up using packet writing (In CD 1.3). My CD-ROM (acer 36x) had a very difficult time reading the disc. Some of the mp3's that I loaded now skip & crack. Why is packet writing less reliable the reqular burning?

Sorry I don't have a direct answer, but I do have a couple observations on my PC:

1) Packet writing took a chunk out of the total space on the CD for it's stuff...
2) The DirectCD software took up a chunk of memory and made my old PC bog down a lot...

I took it off and haven't looked back!

Never liked it and always thought it was unreliable (especially with adaptec/roxio clumsy software).

This is all about to change, look for future CDRW that support Mt Rainer. This means that the same kind of useage (drag and drop in explorer) with nowadays packet software is all done in hardware and it's reliable and fast (no need to wait to format etc).

Currently the only drive anounced to support it is Yamahas CRW3200 (24/10/40) but all next generation ones will do as well.

Actually, I've been using Direct CD for quite some time now and never had any problems reading them from my LG & TEAC CDROM drives... Have you tried reading the CDRW from your burner? I've seen cases where installing UDF Reader helped reading CDRW medias on standard CDROM drives more accurately...

I had to use the CD-ROM to load the data since my CD-RW was loaned to a friend. I got the CD-RW drive back & it read the packet writing disc with no problems.
