Does anybody know of a good free downloadable virus scanner and cleaner? I don't have one right now and I am too cheap to go buy one. Let me know. Thanks.

If I was really concerned about virus probs, id pay for it, id think the Norton, McAfee etc companys would be alittle more on top of it as far as keeping it updated rather then someone who isnt gettin a penny from you...

The two best Anti-virus programs going are Anti Viral Toolkit Pro http://www.avp.com and Pc-Cillin http://www.antivirus.com

They are both updated several times a week and give the best support! I bought and use/have used both on my systems for several years! Along with LockDown 2000 http://www.lockdown2000.com I have NO problems with viruses or trojans! When I get bored, I can always run a trace route and a Who Is search and report the "Kiddies" playing around with things they now nothing about. If they did, they'd use IP Spoofing and Proxies to make it harder to track them down.

Try the trial versions of either or both PC-Cillin and AVP, you'll love them!

As far as free Virus protection goes, I think that InoculateIT Personal Edition is the best, comparable to products that a charged for such as McAfee and Norton. I use it myself and it has regular updates.

I'm not too terribly concerned with viruses infecting my computer because i'm not that stupid to go download something from someone i don't know, and most of the time i don't even download **** people i know send me. its just that you can never be to sure about these things, but i don't feel scared enough to go buy something. i have only had one virus problem that was a class M W97 virus (i think that's what it was) and all it did was delete *.doc files when i opened them and made my HDD appear larger than it was. if i do start to feel scared about viruses, then i might go buy norton or mcafee. thanks.

(p.s. i downloaded that first one, the InnoculateIT Personal Edition)

Where I work, that could put us out of business! ( well, if it weren't for the backup )

I'm sure you know that even an e-mail that comes from someone you know may have been sent by the actual virus (through Outlook for example) without the sender having any knowledge of it.

If you value any of your files I would invest in a virus scanner. Hey, onetime I install a virus scanner on a computer only to find out that it had a virus hanging out in it for a very long time and nobody realized it.

oh yeah i know that the virus can attach itself with a message into any email and someone sends you. i don't download anything from anyone unless it has a personal message that the virus couldn't possibly have made up on its own, and if it looks like a virus could have done it i just wait to talk to the person who sent it to me.

and the *.doc's getting deleted was no problem for me, since I write like one every few months for school and have them all backed up on disks.

Those virus are written by amateur, which are far more harmless then the one that are more advanced that corrupt everything on your drive. What it does is rewrite your drive allocation, or just screw your file table completely. Therefore once a virus struct it can be too late and not even a virus scanner can save you because corrupted file are unretrievable. obvously there are those who hate us and they are good are programming so they thought of this to screw us all up but not surprised if they screw themselve up as well. it seem like even innocent people are hurt from their wicked programming. usually those are the same people who cracks game or app, so blame it on them.
