Hey, how long have they been around?
I just started using it like a week ago. So far so good, downloaded about 30 meg worth of music already. Hehehehe! I have to say that it much better then using FTP or searching the internet for FTP site that turn out to be password protected and are slow as turtle like 1-2K/sec at best.

It's been around for about a year or so I guess. I didn't get into it until i got cable b/c I am too impatient to do anything big like that w/ a 56K unless it is absolutley necessary.

I have been using it since early last year. It has been really good downloading except when someone disconnects half way through your download.
I wish there could be a better way of knowing other peoples transfer speeds. The ping test doesn't really seem to be accurate of how good the download is.
Also when you manualy put in your Line Speed. I think they should have a line speed test when you set up the software so it acurately posts peoples speeds.

Some of the music are quite high quality, while the the one I got from website are so so. Hmm I may have to encode a few song of my own instead of downloading and spreading it like a disease. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I have something different and rare to share with the rest of the people so why encode the same song that everyone already got eh? How about Video Game Music that someone just want to listen to it instead of having to buy the game inorder to listen to it.

Just organize the files by bitrate and choose the highest one.

I think it came out about one year ago.
I started using it in the spring.

This is a bit sneaky, but a lot of Cable/DSL users try to hide their bandwidth by saying they only use a 14.4 modem. Try searching using the options:
|Bitrate must be| |equal to| |14.4 modem|
I have only once found a bona fide 14.4 modem user since I first tried this.

Good info jhpeg. What I do is sort my responses by ping times. Anyone under about 175ms is deffinetely NOT using a modem. Also, check a users file list - most REAL modem users don't have very many songs and alot don't share any at all.
Here's a good article on the history of Napster: http://www.businessweek.com/2000/00_33/b3694001.htm

I usually search by good ping (200 or 300 and lower), I then sort by song length so that I don't get all those ones that got cut off at the end and you manage to get some rare versions too. It's true the ping isn't always reliable but if the transfer isn't 30kb/s or higher I usually delete it and try a diferent user.

what about user with only 56K lieing about having DSL or cable modem? I can tell because when i download from them only 2K/sec. Then there also as many DSL/Cable as their were 14K user, hmm something is fishy.
