I have a few questions relating to this:
1. Is it possible to burn 80min CDR's on HP 8100i CD burner?
2. Is there a registry setting that is set to prevent overburning of CDR's?
3. Which is the most reliable software to burn 80 min CDR's?
I have tried several times, using a variety of applications installed separately, to burn a 80min CDR. Each time I go through the process the system tells me everything is in order. At the end of the burn I am left with a CD that has been partially burnt and the sytem tells me that the CDR is empty. I can write normally to these CDR's using them as a 74min.
Any tips/tricks/solutions would be appreciated.
It isn't the CDRW or CDR drive that determines if you can burn 700mb CDR's
There are programs that will allow you to overburn 700mb on to 74 minute (650mb) CDR's, but you aren't guaranteed that you will get a successful burn, meaning that it's not guaranteed that it will be readable after the overburn. An overburned disc is not a standard disc anymore, so it is possible that you will have problems reading it in some CD players. After the 90 seconds of the leadout the data may be unreliable.
I would suggest that you go out and buy 80 minute (700mb) CDR's rather than try to save money and burn 700mb on 650mb CDR's. As for recording software that will allow you to burn 700mb medias, Adaptec Easy Cd Creator and Disk Juggler. But if you were to try to put 700mb of data to a 650mb, you will be asked if you want the data to be truncated, meaning that the remaining data will be cutoff. Easy CD and Disk Juggler will not allow Overburning as far as I know. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Until all the CD and CDR/W manufacturers and the software vendors get their collective acts together, overburning won't be a reliable proposition for exchanging burned CDs between computers. Funny as it sounds, you can overburn a CDR on two identical drives from the same mfgr. with identical software, but not be guaranteed that you'll be able to read A disc on B or B on A. And you *might* be able to read B on A and not vice versa!!
Listen to NDC. Cough up the extra few bucks and get yourself 700MB (80 minute) CDRs and save yourself a lot of trouble and throw-aways!!
Good luck...

1- No. Sorry it just won't.
2- No. It is a hardware based limitation. Depends on how far the laser will actually go without damaging the burner.
3- I use Nero. Great software for overburning. Lots of tweaks.
The HP 8110i series is unfortunately one of the most basic and worst burners produced. It does not support anything like overburning, 80' cds, RAW writing, nothing. I say this as a former-owner of one. The thing just will not work unless you are doing very basic burning which it is great for. Elaborate-Bytes, who makes CloneCD, has said that is one of the few burners that will never be supported by them...
Oh well, sorry for the bad news. Those 80' cds will still burn as 74' cds so...

Thanks Daveleau, it is good to see that someone actually reads and understands the original questions. Looks like I may have to buy another CD burner if 80min CD's take-off.
