My dad was contemplating getting DSL or a cable modem, but he would probably toss AOL. If we got a cable modem, i would probably put that 8 gig hard drive in here as 'My space' for songs and such. But losing AOL is probably bad for my parents, because they have no clue with IE or Netscape because there computerly challenged that way. Decisions Decisions....

PS- I reall would love a cable modem, im only getting 2k tops out of this 56k.

If I remember right AOL has a program called "bring your own isp", they give you AOLs content that you intern use with your cable or dsl connection, for a nominal fee of course...

IE is not a hard program to work with. i think if you took time and showed them around they would be comfortable using it.

plus they can still use the instant messages. outlook will be different so your gonna have to help them out with it also. thats if you really want cable. **** those small details http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

hey Gomer http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

IE or Netscape is NOT any harder/easier to use than AOL's browser. You just won't have the integrated mail thingy. Dump it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

hehe, hey Warthog http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

If your parents aren't struggling to make ends meet, they may want to stick with aol for ten dollars a month. Sure they are in a cacoon.... But gosh, isn't all warm and cuddly in there =) Imagine all the hassle you would have in weening them from AOL. I still have to walk my ma step by step through moving files around. It's the best of both worlds for ya blind. Ya still get your AOL shenanigans, your blazin cable modem, and happy parents. If not, grab that cable modem and hide when they sign on =)

BTT I can personally tell ya that AOL ROCKS on DSL conections. While it is no longer installed on my machines it is installed on the Wife's, Daughter's pc machines and my Son's macintosh machine. Btw I still have a AOL email addy that recieves MAYBE 1 or 2 spam emails a week if that. That is due to the fact that I have set the mail preferences and I dont give it out. I say for the 9.95 a month that I pay to keep AOL in my home is well worth it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I switched to Earthlink.net (from Gateway.net) a few months ago..like it fine. It's faster than gtwy, and less troublesome than what I've been told aol can be..and it cost 19.95/mo, five bucks more than gtwy, and the hours online are unlimited.

Cable or DSL...I guess the choice depends upon your location. If you've got a lot of local users, then the cable might get bogged down. DSL is great for consistent speed.

I have the choice of both here...Roadrunner cable service from ATT and Infospeed DSl fro Verison. I'm presently using the DSL. For my needs it's plenty fast enough!

As for an ISP, I use Mindspring/Earthlink. I just went past my one year anniversary with them and they have been nothing short of fantastic! They also host my domanin/web site for my business. I highly recommend them!!!

I had AOL before my switch to Mspring...and I still have my AOL account -- I use the bring your own ISp option mentioned in an earlier thread. I use this as an emergency account in case something goes wrong with Mspring. I believe I pay $4.95 per month for the option that I have (I haggled like hell with the person when I cancelled my dial-up service).

It's a tough choice BTT and I know you'll make the right one...

Tony,

Your correct that you can get the 4.95 byoa AOL account it just doesnt have unlimited time on that one. But for a secondary account and to keep email addys that you have had for years it's nice http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
