My nephew has a Compaq 200Mhz with no cache, but an L2 socket. I've been told that adding L2 will make it faster. He's 11, but uses it mostly for lite gaming. Where can I buy this cache? I've checked with Compaq and a number of memory vendors and no one sells cache.
All help appreciated. TIA!!

L2 cache... mmm...
I guess it is becoming more and more dificult to find it as L2 is now integrated in the CPU...

Have you contacted your PC manufacturer ?

How many MB RAM does the PC have ? Adding more RAM will probably increase performance more than adding L2 cache...

Hi Stan,
I've contacted Compaq and they don't have any. Pc has 32MB RAM now. 48MB is max. He's running Win95, so it's not that memory hungry. One memory place I contacted didn't even know what L2 was! Oh well!!
Thanks!!

If you can add just 256K or 512K cache you will see a noticeable difference in gaming it will run at least twice as fast. most of them today are intergrated onto the motherboard such as 512K, 1meg, or 2meg and you can't really add anymore. You may be able to find it in computer shop so call and ask around. Some of them still even sell Cyrix MII cpu ranging from 333 to 400.

Is that cache in a socket or slot? If it is a slot I know where you can get a pipeline burst cache module.

Hey Eski,....
Do you still have the manual for that computer? If not, go to the Compaq site and down the manual. Or call Compaq and get a part # for the Cache..... I have a stick here out of a Compaq Deskpro 133, it may work. It's part # 237716-1. It's a 256k L2 Cache. You can have it in a couple weeks, when I put this machine to rest, for the price of shipping.

It's a slot. Regular, but brown, card size. Estimating 6" long and 1/2"wide??

According to parts list off Compaq site, they list assembly p/n 237716-001 for 256k cache and 240108-001 for 512k. Spare part p/n is 243117-001 for the 256k and -002 for the 512k. They don't list cache as an option for the 4504(which is what I have) although they do list the 256k for the same mobo I have. Hope this makes sense.

Someone who really knows his pc's looked at this one and recommended the cache.
BTW-mobo is listed as MMX onboard not on proc.(according to Compaq website).
Thanks!!

MMX is always on the chip, never on the board. (shows ya what compaq knows http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif)

I had a compaq Presario with a Pentium 200 MMX, and a brown slot in the board with a 128k Cache thing in it. (hey might be the same model!). The board died on me a while ago, But I saved the cache chip and CPU...They look as if they were universal with all compaq pentium boards. This board had one DIMM, and 32MB of RAM integrated INTO the board..board took the RAM with it when it went and gone killed itself!
Doubt 128k would do much tho..Id offer to sell it but Its at home and Im away at college.

I just checked the spare part # and it matches what you need.... I have the 256K stick. I will be getting my new comp in two weeks, when it's up and going, will send you this stick if you want it. E-mail me with an address to send it to, I'll send it when I pull it out.
