I am wondering if the Pentium 3 800 Mhz CPU is going to REALLY improve a system running at 733Mhz.

My main concern is the compatability with the mobo (Asus P3V4X), as well as other problems that maybe exist and I am not aware of.

Anyone cares to comment weather these additional 67Mhz (in combination with the mobo and a GeForce MX card, and 256MB RAM) will be REALLY better?

Thanks!!!

PS: PLEASE do not start comparing Intel with AMD's Athlons and Durons http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Nope, there won't be any noticeable difference between P3 733Mhz and P3 800Mhz. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I doubt it.

The 733 runs on a 133MHz FSB and the 800 on a 100MHz.

I think the 733 is a better choice over the 800 anyhow, and don't even consider the 800 as an upgrade.

Not worth it.

The difference in clock speed is less than 100 MHz. You won't notice any difference. Now, if you had a Pentium III @ 500 MHz and wanted to upgrade to a Pentium III @ 800 MHz, that would be different. Then you'd see a nice performance increase. The 2 clock speed difference isn't worth the price you'd pay for the processor. Hope this helps.

I think that both run on 133 FSB. I'm not sure though... I THINK all Pentium 3s from 733 upwards use 133 FBS.

Also, this is not going to be an upgrade from 733 to 800. It is going to be an upgrade from a "tired" P2 333. So the basic question is do I get the P3 733, or give the extra cash and get the 800? I am willing to give the extra cash only if the 800 is a "better generation" CPU than the 733...

I have already ordered my pc, but haven't decided on the CPU yet. It's going to be a "last minute" choice, but I don't have too much time...

Also, are BOTH CPUs equally compatible with the ASUS P3V4X mobo????? Or one is "better" than the other?

Thanks again for the help!!!

MASTOURA, Just FYI P-3's are still avalable in the 100mhz FSB on cpu's beyond the 733 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif If the cpu is a xxxE then it is a 100mhz chip. if it is a xxxEB then it is a 133mhz cpu. btw I have a 800mhz p-3 cpu that is 8x100 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I also notice now that your asking which CPU would be better. Well IF your planning on overclocking then the 800 would be the one I would chose do to greater avalablity of FSB settings you would have avaliable. BTW the 800 I have listed above currently runs 24/7 for me at 935 (8x117) and is capable of even better with pc133 ram but the pc100 I have in the system currently gets really flaky at the 120mhz spot. Also if you check overclockers.com's cpu database you will see better O/C results with the 800 cpu than there is for the 733 chip.

Good luck. personally both are great chips. go 800 if clocking is your thing or go 733 if you run "as is" http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

my 2cents

Thanks a lot Mntsnow http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

The CPUs I'm considering have both 133Mhz.

But what you said made me wonder...

Isn't it BETTER to have a 800 CPU running at 8*100 than a 800 running at 6*133 ???? Same goes for the P3 733s...

I mean for overclocking, since the first one uses an "8" multiplier while the second a "6". Not sure though...

I say this 'cause you reccommended the 800 for overclocking. Considering that I will take a CPU with 133Mhz, do you still think the 800 is best?

Thanks again!!!

I think one with 100mhz FSB would be better, you could get it to run at 133mhz FSB (or even higher) and you won't overclock the mainboard (or a little). The ones with 133mhz FSB can only be overclocked to 150mhz fsb (that would be with my Abit VA6,it doesn't go higher than 150).And you would overclock the mainboard. It's ideal to have a 100mhz chip to run at 133mhz,because you don't overclock the AT,PCI and AGP,you only overclock the processor. With a 133 chip overclocked you always also overclock the other busses.
