First of all, this is a really cool forum!
Lots of infos and good peeps.:)
It seems that I got myself interested in learning Linux again after I read the big thread about Linux in this forum
Well, right now I have dual OS, Linux and Win98
Both are working fine, xcept that win98 freezes quite often and I cant shut it down(dont care to shut it down)
The linux part is quite stable, boot up the same speed as win98(need some help here)
also modem is not working, maybe its a win modem(supramax 56i voice pci)
so, I need some direction on what to read on the linux documentation project website....
don't tell me to read the whole documentation!
first thing to do for me is to get the modem working :)
Thanks!

Hi kakyoin, and welcome to Sysopt.
However I think your modem is a Win-modem (google search) so you won't have much luck running it under linux :(
I would suggest a cheap external modem for easy linux compatability.
I suspect your Win98 shutdown problem maybe related to power managment (from experience).
Sorry I can't be more helpfull.

Um...modems always seem to be a problem in Linux. I don't think they can use Win Modems. Try getting an old ISA modem (maybe this one (http://sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86346&highlight=US%20Robotics/3%20Com%2056k%20(ISA)%20modem:) ) and that should work. I'm not really a big guru in Linux, I'm actually a newbie, but I know some things about it. Hope this helps...

If you want to get the WinModem working I'm pretty sure it can't be done for most modems and is pretty hard to do with the others. Just head out and buy an external modem. It'll be faster and work with linux.

Yep, an external modem would work too. But since they cost more I figured an ISA modem would be better. Either one is good though.
Thanks for reminding me on that one Eddy. ;)

Thanks Praetorian, if only I had thought of an ISA internal modem :)

Hello,
Linux users have been having quite a bit of luck with PCI modems. Hopefully this article will help:

And ofcourse www.linmodems.org is a great resource. I hope this helps,

SupraMAX 56i is a winmodem, so it will not work in Linux. Winmodem (a.k.a softmodem), is a software based modem, which does not have its own internal processor and depends on the CPU to process the data via Windows.
