I have an Epson Stylus 600 which is about 3 years old, I have a problem in that I cannot print from the black cartridge, the page consists of broken lines. I assume this is due to the nozzles being blocked.
I replaced the cartridge tonight and tried running the cleaning cycle arond ten times. The reults were not much better.
Is there anything else I can do or is the printer now unusable.

Try cleaning the area where the ink comes out on the printer head. This can be done witha Q-tip and some alcohol. If this does not fix it, then you can get a new printer head for the Epson, but it is often hard to find. You may look into a new printer. I believe a print head is about $50.
If you use a printer very irregularly, I would recommend getting HP since you replace the printer head with every cartridge.
Good luck cleaning it,
Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply, I will give the head a clean with some alcohol, someone else did make the same comment today about the HP printers as you did.
I have never had a problem in the past but the last cartridge I used was not a genuine Epson so maybe I only have myself to blame!
Thanks for your help anyway

Xerox suggests using Hot water to clean their printheads, I often use Denatured Alcohol as it is much stronger than rubbing alcohol.
I abandoned a Epson 440 for about 9-10 months, then last week fired it up expecting to trash can it for the same reasons you stated.
Shockingly enough, the print heads were NOT stopped up, at all..
The test page with the little lines were perfect.
Very strange indeed, the power was cut off to it the whole time too.
If you don't have any luck, get back with us, we often know of some deal on a printer..

:( I tried taking the black ink cartridge out, I am unsure what I am supposed to clean. How do you actually get to the print head to clean it?

I HAD the same problem, nothing helped. I only used the printer once or twice a month. I finally trashed it. I HATE epson printers!

Hi hope I get this right first time I have used the forum
I purchased a Cleaning Cartridge for my epson printer but have not needed it yet but could be worth a try as the heads are very difficult to get at
Give Design Media Supplies a ring on 08000745079 that is where I got mine for £8
Hope this helps
