Daniel Carson Lewis, 37, is charged with felony assault, weapons misconduct, criminal mischief and driving while intoxicated. He is being held in Fairbanks on $1.5 million bail.

Lewis is charged with firing at the pipeline several times with a .338-caliber rifle sometime between 2:45 and 3 p.m. Thursday. Troopers found four bullet strikes in the pipeline near the puncture.

EPA said it would take years to reverse the enviromental effects of this spill. I've heard of idiots, but this guy seems to be in a class of his own.

what a freeking moron.. I hope they throw away the keys.. maybe charge him with terrorism. Being we are at war they could do just about anything to him if they considered him a terrorist.

First time I heard of this my first thought was that it'd be some environmentalist trying to show how much a moron with a gun could harm the ARNW (?) place where dubya wanted to drill.

Now I figure he's just a moron with a gun and no ulterior motive.

Indentations from bullets have been found in the line over the years. Pipeline officials said people have shot at the pipeline more than 50 times but never caused enough damage to produce a spill.

There are several types of Crude Oil.

In the early 70's I worked unloading Crude oil in Brunswick Ga on a small inland island.

When the crude reached about 60F it would solidify, we had to keep it heated for it to flow, I've heard the Alaska pipeline has some type of heating to it to keep the oil liquid..
Maybe this oil will not stay liquid and help cleanup crews..

Wasn't there some talk in Congress of a second oil pipeline--which , of course, would be perfectly environmentally safe??
Huh? What were they drinking?
