Am I the only one here that felt the ground shake when the two f-16's, in pursuit of the American Airplanes jet, passed by and left a sonic boom. I was with Hawkeye177 and a friend, Alex, at the house of the Beemers, he's got four and for some odd reason one is always at his grandma's, anywho, I was at Alex's house and BOOM, his neighbor got the bjeebus scared out of her and thought it was WWIII because her garage shook. So we go to take a look at the costruction sites near us and nothing could be seen, while Alex's sister, weird little gril, thought too that it was WWIII and chased us screaming, in a little girl's voice
Don't go!
while was cracking histerical jokes :). So anyways this is the 2nd time I have encountered a fighter near my house, the previous time, I think it was an F-15, flew over and shook our house, while practicing for the Air and Water show in Chicago, which is only about 35 miles away. I was just wonderin if anyone else heard it, I like to wonder ;).

sonic booms are old news to an old man like myself, I grew up in the early 70's and used to hear them 3-4 times a week.

Alas, the skys over New York City are regularly patroled by jet fighters--don't know what "F" they are. Seemed to increase in number yesterday. Seem to fly in pairs--one tailing the other. Makes my girlfiend nervous.

In the old days we called it "the sound of freedom".

I'd rather see the good guys up and flying around then sit and wonder if a 767 is going to fall on my head.

Every thing seems to get magnified here in NYC nowadays. People are nervous. Fighterjets are both a reassurance and a reminder. Can't go anywhere without talk of anthrax.

This reminds of of back in the 'Eighties when AIDS near panic hit.Remember ordering MOLSON and declined the glass. Bartender thought due to AIDS fear and tried to reassure me.
Actually, more mundane fear of common microbes:Have you ever seen how glasses are washed in most bars?

Anyway, was doing Extenship in Clinical Psychology in VA Hospital. We(all interns and externs) were called in about a study on AIDs dementia we would be administering Psych tests. Nobody groused or protested. Yet one by one, most asked out of study because of "heavy schedule", "other commitments" etc. Anything but the REAL rteason : they were afraid to test AIDS patients.

Now, I was working two afternoons a week in drug detox where we assumed everybody potentially had AIDS and took "Universal fluid precautions" before they were universal throughout all hospitals. I'm surprised absenteeism at work isn't higher --yet.

Yet people are nervous and almost anything can trigger it off.

P.S.

We also have 4,500 National Guardsmen (and women?) on ground.

Support you local National Guard!

You usually don't hear them too often (unless you live near a base). The Grissom Air Force base (where the NATO AWACS are being based, I think) is about 45 minutes north of me and you would hear fighters flying over from time to time (before it shut down and became a reserve base), but they usually fly sub-sonic when flying over populated areas.

We get them every year for the Indy 500 during the pre-race festivities. Even sub-sonic they are loud.

I used to be an F16 Crew Chief (mechanic), standing 5 feet away from them when they're at 80% during an engine run will knock you on you ****. And thats just from the jet vibrating the ground.
When they are at idle, the vibration isn't too bad. The noise at any engine % is deafening though. 1 reason why I got out was because of the noise.
A vacuum annoys me now.

I've been knocked over by just an F-4 jockeying into a static display position at an airshow. Amazing at 10% thrust a turbofan engine can blow you down 25 yeards away. Those "deck apes" on carriers earn their pay.
