My CD will not read any disc's, not CD-R discs but any disks. Windows recognizes it and there are no conflicts or problems in Device Manager. All connections are secure. When a disc is placed in the drive I aleays get the message "D:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready". Is this a sign that the lens or the laser are going bad or are already gone?
Not neccessarily. You might want to hook it up to another system or try removing the CDROM driver in Device Manager and let Windows reload the driver.

I have removed removed it a couple of times but that did not help.
Have you tried connecting the CDROM drive on another system? If it's the same problem on another system, it's quite possible that the laser on the CDROM drive has come to its end.
