You have to find out if it is a slot processor or a socket processor!

Then go here!

speedo i apreciate your helping me,
but all dell tells you is how to take a processor out and put one back in
they dont specify what processors the motherboard supports nor what the model no. motherboard it is,
now you can see why its frustraiting

if it helps i have a slotted processor

If you have had the cover off did it have any identifying numbers on the board?

Does the bios string show on the bottom left hand side of the screen upon bootup?

Numbers like

2A59L-XXX-XXX

or

51-XXX-XXX

i get nothing for bios, i looked and even tried forcing an error but nothing comes up saying bios.

I cant undo my pc as im disabled and cant monover around the back freely,

I want to upgrade my cpu and also see if i can upgrade anything else so i can get someone to do it. But i need to know the motherboard first.

im sorry if this is taking your time up
I thought it may have been an easy Q. with all the info i tried to supply from sisoft sandra, but obviously that was a waist of time too

Well, just looking over your system, if you want to upgrade something you might look at getting a new video adapter. Your PIII processor has lots of power to drive a better video card. You have lots of memory, but you could ditch the 64meg dimm and replace with a 128meg.

You don't need to know a lot about the board to carry out these changes. It just has to have an empty AGP slot for video and your memory you can take to your local computer store and ask them to match it. That is, if you want to make some improvements.

Getting a better processor won't help without an extreme improvment in the video adapter.

Time is something that I have to spare!

I have never had any experience with Dell machines!

With all of the people on this forum you would think somebody else would have one and maybe have some sort of answer for your Q.

Go HERE (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/1,10150,0-10000-103-0-1-7,00.html?tag=srch&qt=cpuid&cn=&ca=10000) and download one of the cpu id programs and let it tell you what cpu you have. Then post back and let us know. Then we can probably reccomend what you computer might take.
The Unigue ID number listed in the info is for a P3 I bet. I don't think celrons had the cpu id number feature on them. Dell left the number for the cpu turned on. Most after market boards have a feature in the bious to turn off cpu id. Or I think this is what the Unique ID # is!
If the Unique ID# isn't your cpu id number then it might be the bious numbers go HERE (http://www.wimsbios.com/) and run those numbers and see if you come up with anything.

Go HERE (http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86720) and read the post by JohnE. Try this little program and see if it give your bious string numbers. Then go to the other web sites he lists to cross them out.

tries everything on motherboard.org already nd nothing shows up.

However yesterday i hd a friend open my machine and got this info.

On the motherboard is says in big letters DELL
with 2 white strips with no.s on
one says DSN IE-0002TR-12414-07R-4098
the other says REV A01

not sure if tht helps

I know its a dell motherboard, but know one can say what it can accept in terms of processors ect.

As previously posted dell will not support this information
but someone must know

OK I've been looking at the post fairly carefully - you're right the Dell site is not v. user-friendly.

But you also said that a friend opened the machine up - would it be possible to describe the CPU in your next post.

I believe that if there's a big lump of black plastic with aluminum fins coming off then it will be slot - like a P2. If it looks smaller, and squarer with closer contact to the board and probably no black plastic visible then it will be socket.

That would only be a first step to identification, but it may help some of the more savvy people who stop by this forum.

Don't give up - it gets easier, and everyone is really out to help.

Look forward to seeing you get round this.

thanks jester i thought i might have been getting on peoples nerves by now.

it is like you say it is.
I know its a slot 1 processor and SiSoft sandra recornises it as slot 1 as well.
Its a intel PIII
hope thats what you need

hey again

I just realized that you want a fix on the exact board type - tricky with OEM

I've just had to run some errands but I've managed to have a look over at intel (I ran out while posting!)

check this comparison sheet out - even if it doesn't help you, it may help one of the others:

http://developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/linecard/valuepc.htm

Like I said earlier, I'm no expert but I hope this helps.

BTW - people only get on others' nerves when they start getting short - some posts in here go for 4/5 pages - I hope for your sake that yours doesn't have to :)
