are cable modems external units? can i connect a cable modem into my usb port? (i am asking this because i have a laptop not a desktop computer) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes there external and they connect into a network card. The most common network card are internal, but there are some that are USB.

Majority of them are external boxes that connect to your LAN Card. I myself use an external Motorola cable modem box that connects to the LAN card.

I have an external cable modem, and it normally connects to an ethernet card, but my provider was to cheap to give me one so they gave me a usb ethernet adapter, which i immediatly replaced with a nice linksys 10/100 etherfast card for $5 after rebates.
