Hello-
I have been using the "let windows choose" setting for my virtual memory. I have heard that setting this option to a fixed value of about 3x your RAM provides better performance, because it doesn't need to resize the swap file. Is this true?
I have 128MB PC133. So I should set it at 384MB? What about smaller or larger?
Thanks

256 is what I would set it to with 128. I have heard 1.5 to 2X your RAM. One thing that is a really nice tweak that helps with bootup is adding this w/o quotes to the [386enh] area of your system.ini:
"ConservativeSwapFile=1"
Boots up much more quickly and is related to the swap file.

Yes, setting a fixed size for the virtual memory does improve performance.
Make sure to defrag your hard disk before doing this. Since you have 128mb of physical memory, first you should disable the virtual memory and then reboot the system and defrag the disk without virtual memory enabled so that you will get a contigeous virtual memory file. After you have finished defragging the disk, reboot the system and enable the virtual memory file to a fixed size. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey daveleau, or anyone, what does that added line in your system.ini file do anyway? Just curious.

That's funny, Dave, cause it goes back to the simplier (quicker) W95 method. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
